Tal

Emerald light glowed from deep within the churning black waters of Prism
Lake high in the mountains north of Reno. e full September moon silvered
the water’s surface, and light from the large bonfire licked at stacks of oddly
shaped white tufa rocks that lined the shore like toppled pillows or clumps of
cauliflower. A group of Anaho men and women danced around the flames. e
beads and feathers stitched to their deerskin garments twisted in time to the
beating drums, and their singsong chant sent sparks soaring under the canopy
of stars.

An owl’s cry split the frosty air, and the ground shuddered underfoot as the
ancient ship broke the roiling surface. Tal stood by Sam and Chief Black as the
forged metal vessel settled into place.

e tattoo around Tal’s left ankle began to warm, and its iridescent tangle
of specially inked vines lit up like colorful jewels beneath the leg of her pants.
Avani and Link, fellow vessels with matching tattoos, felt the same prickle. e
three of them had helped Sam found this newest vessels program four months
ago, when he, Doc, and Liam had saved them from their own lives and
brought them into this crazy new realm that continued to change with every
visit from this ship.

Aaron had been the fourth vessel, joining late, last, and pretty much by
accident. He had also been the first to die, sacrificing himself to stop the rogue
spirit from killing others. It had churned Aaron’s insides apart even before he
crashed the plane into the Pacific.

A loud growl echoed around the mountains above as a bobcat emerged
from a nearby stand of trees. e animal stood unusually large, almost the size
of a tiger, with thick muscles rippling against a blanket of spotted fur. Pointed
ears tipped with white furry tufts framed its eyes. ey beamed like goldengreen torches in the moon’s glow. e beast loped toward them, leaping into
the air as a cat but landing as a handsome, lightly bearded man with a broad
chest, shoulder-length brown hair, and the same eyes “All clear,” he said,
striding toward the group on shore.

“ank you, Liam,” Chief Black replied, never taking his eyes off the lake.
Liam was the program’s shape-shifting Spirit Guard. Disguised as the
shelter’s handyman he was, in reality, assigned by Elysium for vessel and
program protection.

“Have you heard anything more from Ron?” Doctor Eva Lawson asked,
her British accent soft on the light, steady breeze.
Sam ran fingers through his salt-and-pepper hair. “Not yet.”
“You will, Samuel,” the chief said. Wind tugged at his headdress, rippling
the long fall of hawk feathers. “Your son is too angry to remain silent for long.”
Tal looked down. Bile soured her throat. She had been the one to make the
call four months ago, to alert the state licensing office that had then alerted the
governor’s office about Sam’s name not being on the paperwork for the
homeless shelter where they lived.
