Ava
I pull my hoodie over my head and softly close my locker door. All my
actions seem to be choreographed and calculated for minimal impact, and if
I’m honest, they are. I’m not stupid. I know any sudden movement on my
part will grab his attention, and I would really like to end the week without
another added incident with Chase Dixon being a total dick to me if I can
help it.
I pull my bag strap over one shoulder and like the ghost I’ve become
through the years, I walk down the jam-packed hall of Asheville High,
sidestepping my way through the crowd until I reach my blessed freedom
through the double doors of our school. My steps falter every now and then,
as I try my best to swivel through the rowdy jocks, giggling cheerleaders, and
the other freaks and geeks that stand in my way. If I were my nemesis, then
these assholes would part like the red sea for me. But unfortunately no one
wields the same power over this school as Chase seems to.
Especially not me.
I’m just a girl from the Southside, trying to make do and keep her head
above water, all the while praying each day that the king of Asheville High
will cut me some slack and leave me alone.
I won’t lie. It does sting though.
Chase lives in the same trailer park as I do, in an old, beat-up piece of
tin parked right in front of mine and yet he’s still treated like fucking royalty
in these halls, while I’m looked down on like I’m day-old trash. But I know
why he’s a god, and I’m no one of importance.
It all comes down to fear.
Everyone fears Chase.
It isn’t breaking news that the most popular guy in Asheville High has a
volatile temper. He can sweet talk a girl out of her panties one second and
then shove his fist into someone’s face the very next. I’ve seen him lose his
shit through the years plenty of times and it sure isn’t pretty. He has major
anger issues which stem from a shitty upbringing and even shittier prospects.
I get his anger.
I’m angry all the time, too.
Not because I’m dirt poor and will probably never set foot outside of the
Southside, let alone Asheville. I can deal with the life I’ve been dealt with on
that account. Not everybody is destined to live the American dream—some
of us get by just fine living off nightmares.
No. The reason why I’m so angry all the time is because the only friend
I ever had hates my guts, and worst of all, he’s put it in his head that I should
live out my days tormented by his cruelty. Yep. You’ve guessed it. The
award for the bane of my existence goes to none other than Chase Dixon
himself. The guy who has everyone under his thumb and who everyone
follows like brainless sheep, even when it comes to giving me a hard time.
Sigh.
