The Pettigrew Mansion, Denver, Colorado, December 1903
“MR. GIBBS!”
Gibbs, Mrs. Pettigrew’s butler, walked down the grand hall, head up,
shoulders back. He turned left before reaching the French doors leading to the
gardens, traversed another hall, then ducked into a shorter one that led to a
staircase and proceeded downstairs. “The woman has the lungs of an
elephant,” he grumbled.
When he entered the kitchen, Mrs. Pettigrew’s cook, Mrs. Fraser, was at
the stove stirring a pot. “What is it, you badgerous windbag?”
“Badgerous, am I?” she snapped. “That’s not a word.”
“It is now.” He glanced at the long worktable in the center of the room,
then pulled out his pocket watch. “Is Mrs. Pettigrew’s tea ready?”
“No, it is not. And would you like to know why?” She slammed a lid onto
the pot.
He rolled his eyes and sighed. “I shudder to think.”
“Because someone didn’t pick up the order at Watkins’ Grocery.” Her
eyes narrowed at him. “Fantine always did it but …” Her eyebrows shot to
the ceiling. “… oh, yes. She’s not here.” She batted her eyelashes at him.
“How silly that I keep forgetting.”
He examined a fingernail. “Well, feeble minds and all …”
She banged the spoon on top of the pot. “I’m no more feeble-minded than
you. The girl’s been gone for months, you dolt.”
“Hag.”
She picked up a cleaver from the worktable.
Gibbs arched an eyebrow at her. “There’s no need for violence.” He
smiled slyly. “I must inform Mrs. Pettigrew of your desire to visit Clear
Creek. There’s a woman there you have got to meet.” His smile turned into a
grin. “That almost rhymed.” He chuckled, turned on his heel and headed for
the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Mrs. Fraser called none too kindly.
“To tell Mrs. Pettigrew that someone has to run to Watkins’ Grocery.” He
stopped at the door. “Best get going, hadn’t you? I’d pick up some soup
bones from the butcher’s shop as well. It’s Tuesday, after all.”
She gasped, then smacked the cleaver on the worktable. “One of these
days, Gibbs, one of these days …” She went to the service door that led
outside and grabbed her hat and coat off a coat rack. “I’ll be back!” She left,
slamming the door behind her.
“Temperamental trollop.” He straightened his jacket, squared his
shoulders, then returned upstairs to the drawing room. His employer hadn’t
been herself lately and everyone in the household knew why.
Fantine, Mrs. Pettigrew’s beloved assistant was gone. Swept away by
love not months ago when she paid a visit to the famous town of Clear Creek,
Oregon. Now she was married and already expecting her first child.
Unfortunately for Fantine, being with child was having an ill effect on her.
Dr. Drake, one of the local doctors, advised her to stay put though the
holidays and wait until after the baby was born before she came to visit Mrs.
Pettigrew in Denver.
“Oh, there you are, Gibbs,” Mrs. Pettigrew said as he entered. “I need
some tea.”
