Ava
The waiter standing before me is the biggest jerk I’ve ever met in my life.
And that says a lot because I’ve encountered many jerks in my sixteen
years on this planet.

The guy, who looks my age, wears the biggest scowl I’ve ever seen on a
person. All because I nearly rammed into him on my way to the kitchen to
talk to my grandmother, with my best friend Lily Hastings and her boyfriend
Xavier Hall trailing after me. Grandma Vivian is catering the charity dinner
my other grandparents are hosting tonight. I mean, yeah, the guy’s carrying
this huge tray of food and it could have been a disaster, but I did say I was
sorry.

He scoffs, his shaggy brown hair falling into his brown eyes. “You think
you can just give me a lame apology and be on your merry way? I hate
people like you. You think the world worships the ground you walk on. You
look down your nose at hard-working people. You’re not even supposed to be
back here. Think you can go wherever you want. Not caring if you’re
bothering people who are trying to work.”

It takes a second for his words to enter my ears and settle in my brain.
Because there’s no way he spoke to me like that. No way. Lily and Xavier
stand there staring at him with shocked expressions, too.
“How dare you talk to me like that?” I demand. “Do you know who I
am?”
He rolls his eyes. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did I offend the spoiled princess? Do I
need to get down on my hands and knees and lick your shoes, begging for
forgiveness?”

I don’t get ticked off easily. I like to think I’m level-headed and a calm
person. But anger boils deep inside me, spreading to every part of my body.
“How could they have such a rude jerk working here? I should report you and
get you fired right away.” My gaze lowers to the nametag pinned to his shirt.
“Aidan.”

A cute name for a cute guy who’s rotten inside.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” he sneers. “Must feel real good to snap
your fingers and get whatever you want. You people think you rule the world
and the people in it.”
You people? As in, people with money?
Who the heck does he think he is to judge me? He doesn’t know me. He
doesn’t know my family.

Grandma Vivian hires good, kind people to work for her. Not jerks like
this guy. Oh, when she hears how one of her servers spoke so rudely to her
own granddaughter, he’ll be out of here faster than you can say “hors
d’oeuvres.”
“Ignore him, guys,” I tell Lily and Xavier as I turn toward the kitchen.
“When I tell my grandmother about this incident, she’ll fire that piece of
garbage without even blinking.”

The sneer is slapped off his face. “Grandmother?”
I glare at him. “Yeah. Vivian Wood is my grandmother. And the people
who are hosting the event are my other grandparents, Easton and Celine
Knight.”
His face pales. “Y…you’re Ava Knight?” he sputters.
It takes everything I have not to grin in an evil, prepare-to-meet-yourdoom sort of way.
