“I shall never understand you, Rosalind,” Miss Olivia Bliss said as she
peered over her painted fan. She whipped it closed, turning away from the
window and the people promenading up and down the fashionable street.
Though they did not live in the most exclusive part of town.
Miss Rosalind Travers lifted her gaze from the pages of the book she’d
been happily devouring for just a brief moment, met her cousin’s eyes, and
gave her a quick smile.
“I know you shan’t,” Rosalind replied easily. “And that’s quite all right. I
shall never truly understand you either.”

Rosalind let out a soft sigh as she traced her fingers over the page of her
book, savoring the feel of the paper before she pointed out gently, “I have
never been interested in fans, or stockings, or silks, but you are. And I far
prefer books like The Adventures of Mr. Hagenbottom’s Ride Through
Scotland. Or this one—The Many Trials and Loves of a Highland Laird in
the Time of Bonnie Prince Charlie. They content me.”
Olivia did not appear impressed or convinced or content. Her blonde curls
danced about her face as she plunked herself down on the burgundy settee
next to her cousin.

In fact, she appeared worried, perplexed even.
“But how is it possible,” Olivia protested. “That you can enjoy such a
thing when you know that your entire future depends on how you look? We
do not have large dowries. It is our charms that will secure a husband.”
Rosalind hesitated, then stared at the black block letters. “Well, if my
entire fortune depends on how I look, then I’m in a great deal of trouble.”
Olivia tsked audibly before she reached out and took Rosalind’s hand.
“That is not true, and you know it. You simply have no interest in impressing
gentlemen. You do not care for them.”

“I like gentlemen in pages,” Rosalind defended, savoring her cousin’s
touch. They did not often see eye to eye, and yet they were friends and often
each other’s only comfort. For Olivia’s parents cared for little but

advancement of the family. They certainly did not care about their daughter’s
or niece’s desires.
Olivia frowned. “That is not the same thing, and you know it well. I enjoy
gentlemen in pages as well. I like a good novel, but you are obsessed.”
