EMMY
“Madison Emilia Fuller, please tell me you did not drop the squad
without speaking to me about it first.”
I let out a sigh, gaze drifting to the ceiling. “Okay, then. I didn’t drop
the squad.”
“Em, seriously? What happened?”
I sit up, hugging a cushion to my chest. “I just got so tired, Mom.”
“Tired?”
“Exhausted, honestly. Do you know how much work it is juggling
cheer, my major, and all those shifts at Lawson?”
There’s a pause on the other end of the phone, and I envision my mom’s
all-knowing smile. “Oh, honey, you know that I—”
“Right,” I cut in, a mixture of admiration and exasperation in my voice.
This woman never fails to remind me of her feats. Not only was she
pregnant during nursing school, but she also proceeded to raise me as a
single parent, complete her degree, and work part-time while doing it all.
“Who am I kidding? Of course you know. Because you’re fucking
superwoman or something.”
“Language, Em.”
“Sorry.” I shift uncomfortably, shoving the cushion beneath my thighs.
“Anyway, I was just calling to let you know that I won’t be attending camp
this year. But I’m still staying around campus. I need to find a place of my
own since the girls are moving back in.”
I’ve been subletting this apartment for the last couple of months, but my
time here is officially running out. The two people who rent this place
during the academic term, Shannon and Jade, will be coming back in just a
few short weeks. It pains me to admit that summer’s almost over.
Unfortunately, I had to stick around campus in order to keep my workstudy position. My supervisor, kind as he is, wasn’t willing to hold it for me
if I gave up the summer hours, and I simply couldn’t allow that to happen. I
like having the extra spending money, and it also keeps me from having to
ask my mom for more help.
“Any leads?” she asks.
“Kind of? It feels too weird to stay with anyone on the team now, and
I’m not sure that I’d even want to. I was thinking about asking Matty if he
still needed a roommate.”
“Aw, Matty’s such a good kid.”
“The best,” I say because it’s so unbelievably true. Matty and I have
been friends since grade school, and he’s always been the best boy—now
man, I guess—that I’ve ever known. Even now that he’s some hotshot
baseball captain, he still treats me just the same.
I’m his little Emmy from the next street over. The girl with the chronic
scraped knees and the embarrassing snort of a laugh.
“I always thought he had a little thing for you when you were younger.”
I roll my eyes, a smile tugging at my lips. “Matty’s into men, Mother.”
“Not both?”
“Not me. That’s for sure.”
“Right, okay.” She clicks her tongue. “I suppose that should be fine,
then.”
