“I’ve never robbed a bank before.” Scruggs flipped the cylinder of her
revolver open, checked the loads, then shoved it into her thigh holster. “Is it
hard?”
“There’s a knack to it,” Senior Centurion Anastasios said, marching
beside her. “Takes practice. And keep your weapons hidden. Still people on
the street. We stand out enough as it is.”
Scruggs scanned the darkened street. The main street from the spaceport
didn’t run to streetlights, or sidewalks, or sewers. But it had selections of
businesses that were open at night. This block contained a tire repair shop
with tires spilling into the street and a pawn shop with armored doors and
bars on the window. A cluster of three smokey restaurants edged the corner.
She surveilled the patrons—they might not shoot her for looking at them,
but if she shot first, they’d shoot back.

Most pedestrians wore loose shirts over shorts, some lightweight
business suits. Centurion Anastasios wore drab gray ship coveralls over a
dark skinsuit, cinched with a dirty creased utility belt. Scruggs’s starched
uniform, new belt, clean backpack and shiny pouches gleamed in the store
lights. “Sorry, Centurion.”

“Don’t worry too much. We don’t want people connecting three armed
wanderers with the upcoming bank robbery. Not the way it’s done.”
Dena, sauntering a step behind the two, laughed. “Robbed a lot of banks,
have you, Old Man?”
Ana counted on his fingers. “Seventeen. Well, sixteen. I robbed one
twice.”

“Why in the Emperor’s name were you robbing banks?”
“Because that’s where the money is, of course. Private, next item. Rules
of engagement. Confirm those bullets are frangibles?”
“Yes, Senior Centurion. No deaths, like you said.”
Dena stepped next to Scruggs and draped her arm over the younger
woman’s shoulder. “Look at you two hardened killers, worried about
hurting somebody.”

“Centurion says that the police always work harder if there’s violence
during a robbery, so only as much violence as necessary.”
“Who decides the necessary amount of violence? Is that you, Old Man?”
“Nature Girl.” Ana scowled at Dena. “First, this insurance place is
supposed to be empty at night, according to our contacts. Second, if it is
not, there will be no shooting unless absolutely necessary. We want to get in
and get out quickly and quietly. Thus the frangibles. And speaking of
deaths, take care with that slingshot of yours. You can break some bones,
but not heads, understood?”

“You’re not the boss of me, Old Man.” Dena removed her arm from
Scruggs’s shoulder, flipped a metal sphere into the rubber pocket of her
slingshot, extended, aimed, and let fly. She shot a wall two hundred feet
away, next to a preening raccoon. The animal yowled and fled into the dark.
“Don’t hurt him!” Scruggs said.
“Relax, Baby Marine.” Dena flexed her rubber band. “I didn’t hit him.
He’s not hurt, only embarrassed.”

“Don’t hurt the animals.”
“I don’t hurt animals, only people. Unless I’m in the woods and hungry,
then the rules are different.”
“Good. I like animals.” Scruggs wiped sweat off her face. “Warmer than
I expected.”
