MY BLARING alarm cuts through my head like a freight train. I groan as I
slap at my nightstand to find my phone to turn the damn thing off. Instead, I
manage to knock it and the lamp onto the floor. I curse, nearly falling off
the bed as I reach for the phone. Finally grabbing my prize, I turn the alarm
off and collapse back onto the mattress. Three hours of sleep was not
enough after a whole night of drinking.
Forty-five minutes later, I jerk awake.
Fuck!
I fell back asleep. Riley is going to murder me. I rush around my room
trying to find a clean Java, Java shirt, and realize they are all dirty. I pick
one up off the floor and give it a sniff. It’s a wrinkled mess, but it smells
fine. I throw it on with a pair of jeans, then hurry out of my little apartment.
Somehow, I make it to work, and I’m only ten minutes late. Riley looks
me up and down and shakes her head.
“You look like shit.”
“Sorry I’m late,” I say, ignoring her comment.
She grabs a t-shirt from the display and tosses it at me. “Go back and
change out of that dirty shirt and fix your face. Maybe brush your hair…”
I catch the shirt and do as I’m told for once. I know I’m on thin ice.
Riley has been patient with me. Lord knows I’ve given her a million
reasons to fire me over the last few months. I’m incredibly thankful for all
that she’s done for me over the years and hate that I’m disappointing her. I
know I need to get my shit together, but I don’t know how. How do you get
over a broken heart? After three years of back and forth, you’d think I’d
have figured out how to let him go.
I take a long look in the bathroom mirror and hate what I see. Last
night’s makeup is smeared under my bloodshot eyes, and my hair is a mess.
Riley was right, I look like shit. At least the outside matches the inside. I
wash my face and run my fingers through my hair, trying to tame it. I
change my shirt and decide it’s as good as it’s going to get.
Riley hands me a cup of coffee, which I gratefully take. I drink it down,
not caring that it’s so hot it’s scalding my throat. Four more cups, and I
might start to feel human again. Unfortunately, the first customers of the
day start flooding in, and I have to put on my happy barista smile instead of
drowning myself in caffeine. Thankfully, the morning flies by, and by
lunchtime, my hangover is a distant memory.
I’m busy refilling the pastry case when my best friend Ivy comes in
holding her baby. I smile the first genuine smile I’ve had in days.
“Hey, little mama! What are you doing here?”
“Coffee… so much coffee…”
“Don’t tell me my little angel Logan is keeping you up at night,” I say,
cooing at the adorable baby in her arms.
“Aiden has been in Chicago for a few days, and we both miss him.”
