Six Years Earlier
The sound of the crowd gets my blood pumping. This is what I fucking live
The coldness of the ice, the feel of the stick in my hand, the blaring of
the horns, the music booming from the speakers, the smoke and lights
flashing. This DJ has his art nailed down.
“Seek and Destroy” by Metallica thunders through the rink as my skates
hit the ice. I fucking love everything about hockey. Live and breathe it. But
what I love more than anything else is the moment I step onto the ice and I see
her. Kathryn Kilgor, the only person who’s managed to take over more of my
soul than this game.

She jumps up and spins around. Something she does every game to show
off the words on the back of her jersey. Monroe. My name. I smile when she
turns back around and waves at me. Kathryn loves the sport just as much as I
do, which I honestly didn’t think was possible.
The sound of my name being chanted fills the rink as the team warms up.
Just before it’s time to skate off the ice again, I breeze over to where Kathryn
is seated and touch my glove to the plexiglass. She pushes to her feet and does
the same, mouthing the words “kick ass” to me.
“You’re pussy-whipped as fuck, dude.” My teammate shakes his head in
disgust.

“Jealousy isn’t a color that looks good on you, Westin.” I laugh at him.
“Jealous? Of only putting my dick into one hole? Hard fucking pass,” he
grunts.
I ignore the dumbass. I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks. They don’t
know what Kathryn and I have. They’re the ones missing out, if you ask me.
Westin’s just been signed to the NHL. This is his last year with us and my
eye is on his current position on our college team. Right now, I wear the A.
But it’s the C I want. Team Captain. And when I want something, I don’t ever
fucking stop until I get it.

“Let’s get out there and fucking win,” the coach shouts.
I take my place with my teammates, preparing to walk back down the
tunnel. And, again, that feeling hits me as I step out onto the ice with my line.
I skate over to my position and eye the opposing team. The fucking
Columbian Thunderbirds. They’re decent enough, but not as good as we are.
They know it too, judging by the hardened glares on their faces.
They’re ready to do whatever it takes to try to win. They know they won’t,
but they gotta at least try, right?

The puck drops, and all my focus is on that round disk. Westin sends it
flying down the ice, and I’m charging after it, knocking right into the fucker
attempting to block me. I get to the puck, rush the crease, and aim for the back
of the net.
