 Sarah
I’m huffing, my frustration bubbling up as I snatch my constantly ringing
phone from the kitchen counter. The caller ID flashes ‘Mom’, and I already
know what this call is about.
My father’s anniversary is looming, and my parents’ expectations are as
predictable as they are daunting. They expect me to bring a boyfriend to the
celebratory dinner.

The irony? I don’t have a boyfriend, nor am I looking for one.
Taking a deep, steadying breath, I swipe the screen and bring the phone to
my ear. Mom’s voice, loud and unmistakable, fills the room.
“Sarah, darling! How are you?”
“I’m fine, Mom,” I reply, trying to sound casual. “But I can’t talk long. I’ve
got plans today, you know, being my day off and all.”
She understands, or at least pretends to, and quickly cuts to the chase.
“So, is it true? You’re bringing your boyfriend to dinner?”
I bite my lower lip, cursing my past self for fabricating a boyfriend just to
get Dad off my back. Now, the lie has snowballed, and I’m trapped.
“Yes,” I mumble, and she squeals in delight.

“Oh, Sarah, I can’t wait to meet this mysterious man who’s thawed your
cold heart!” she exclaims.
I almost roll my eyes but manage a laugh instead.
“You’ll love him, Mom.”
“I hope so! Now, go on, do your thing. Love you!” She says, hopeful, her
voice tinged with excitement.

“Love you too,” I say, ending the call.
I stretch my arms above my head, the weight of my little white lie pressing
down on me. Where on earth am I going to find a boyfriend in a week?
Sure, I’ve been on a few dates, but nobody stood out.
Lying about a breakup is an option, but that would either worry my parents,
or they’d see right through it.

With a heavy sigh, I grab my bag and head for the door, my mind racing
with possibilities and dead ends. As I open the door, the bright sunlight
floods in, forcing me to shield my eyes for a brief moment.
As I lower my hands and start descending the stairs, I’m greeted by a
familiar sight: Jake, my new next-door neighbor, half-naked and working
on his lawn as usual.

Despite my irritation, I can’t help but notice his well-groomed beard,
captivating green eyes, and muscles rippling with every movement.
But he’s a handyman, often working on random projects that fill the air with
noise and smells, disrupting the peace each time I step outside. He had
promised to address this, but clearly, he hasn’t bothered.

Fuelled by my growing annoyance, I march over to him.
“What the hell are you doing now?” I snap.
Jake looks surprised but simply laughs it off, explaining he’s making chairs
for a client. His laughter, rather than soothing, only fans the flames of my
irritation.
