Bea
“BULLSHIT!” I SHOUT AS the stranger across from me sets three cards
down on the middle pile. I look up triumphantly, but an entire table of
staring eyes quickly humbles me back to my usual quietness.
Too loud, Bea.
The only people here who aren’t looking at me like I’ve just pulled my
plain T-shirt up over my head are Silas and Jessica. Silas is trying—and
failing miserably—to stifle a laugh behind his fist, while Jess is looking at
me sympathetically, squeezing her fiancée’s leg under the table in a bid to
distract him. I scowl at them both.
My outburst is forgotten quickly, it seems, as the rest of the guests return
to the game, but my blush is still burning its way up my neck and across my
fair cheeks in full vengeance.
“I’m getting a drink,” I mumble, keeping my head low. I knock into the
corner of the table as I stand, almost sending my half-full glass flying
before I catch it at the last second.
Get me out of here.
“But the game’s not finished,” Jessica starts, waving towards the pile of
cards I’d discarded in my haste. “You’re winning.”
“Go on without me, it’s fine.” I move towards the kitchen space in Silas
and Jessica’s apartment, silently cursing their open-plan home. What I
wouldn’t give for a second of privacy…
I could leave—honestly, I’d probably love nothing more—but how could
I skip out on my best friends’ farewell party so early? They’re finally about
to get their happy ending, and that’s definitely worth celebrating. Even if I
am completely out of my element in a room full of strangers.
Silas and Jessica are moving away from Fayette Bay and I’m happy for
them, even if I do secretly wish they’d pack me into one of these boxes and
take me with them. They’ve been my rock since everything happened last
year, with Desmond Rose keeping us trapped in his dungeons and almost
killing Silas…multiple times. It’s reached the point that if I’m not here,
they’re at my house. We’re almost inseparable, and I’ve had a full year of
them being my safety nets should the memories all get too much.
But now they’re moving away, and I’m being left behind.
I have Maria, of course, but she’s always so busy running her café. Silas
and Jessica just understood the whole locked up in a dungeon with a scary,
unhinged conman kind of thing. Not that I’d ever wish that on anyone, but
there’s some kind of unspoken bond between us now.
“Hi,” a deep voice rumbles behind me, interrupting my thoughts and
drawing me back to my mortifying reality. “I’ve been appointed as the
spokesperson to make sure you’re okay.”
I meet his eyes and have to stop myself from recoiling from the watery
green, crystal-clear pools shining with playfulness and childlike excitement.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen eyes quite so bright before.
A brown curl hangs loosely over the frame of his glasses, and I have the
weirdest urge to reach up and push it away.
