Restlessness
Syriah
I leaped from the noisy mountain stream and shook the frigid water from
my raven fur. After I opened my eyes, the beautiful landscape dotted with the
golden leaves of shimmering aspens graced my senses. The smell of the
forest clung to my coat. I shifted into human form and ran nude through the
glossy grass, noticing how my breath left thin fog trails in its wake. The area
surrounding me felt so lively and vibrant—with one exception.

Memories of my teen years pained me, and tears threatened to fall as I
thought about Laurent. This was our secret garden, our getaway, a place
where we would come to escape reality. My motivation for leaving home,
today, was to gain clarity about my future instead of running away from my
past.

A long time ago, I wished I would live here with family members close
by one day. Fate, however, had other plans.
Laurent and I used to crawl through the tiny opening between these rocks
to reach our secret garden before the Great Battle ruined everything. We
would escape from our pack to share a few stolen hours of laughter and
lovemaking. Magic Mountain had felt like living in a dream to us.

Being up
near the clouds, we often stuck out our tongues, trying to catch water droplets
from cumulonimbus clouds, imagining they’d taste sweet like cotton candy.
When my sister Jezebel told me Laurent had been killed in the Great
Battle, I mourned him even though his body was never found. But, as I
walked around and traced memories of happier times, I muttered to myself,
“Get a grip Syriah!”

A sudden flutter of wings caught my attention, and I looked up to see a
single bald eagle perched on a branch overhead. The bird watched me with its
beady eyes, and I found myself smiling as if it was an omen from Laurent
himself, sending his love even beyond life. Then, suddenly, the eagle spread
its wings and flew away, carried by the wind.

“Laurent!” I shouted, my voice wafting through the quiet mountain air.
My body felt heavy as I sank to the ground and sat on a large rock. Then,
after crying for some time, I took a deep breath and stood straight again. At
that moment, I realized why the eagle had come to visit me. “It’s an omen,” I
told myself. “Laurent is trying to tell me it’s time to move on….”

I took in the stunning scenery one last time before transforming into my
wolf form. Then, I could barely squeeze through the small gap in the rock—it
would have been impossible for a human. My sister let me live in her village
surrounded by my much-loved pack mates, and I was grateful for that.
However, recently I’d started feeling adventurous and wanted to explore and
discover where fate was taking me, and the eagle had simply confirmed my
desire.
