The Missing Page
Finnigan
“THEN STAY WITH ME,” Laynah pleaded. “We can figure it out together.
There’s no need to leave the kingdom!”
She was soft in his arms, and the hopeful smile on her features drew him
in. How could he say no to her?
I should go. It’s not fair of me to ask her to give up her huskarlship for
me.
Saying goodbye was proving more difficult than he’d expected, and his
resolve was threatening to desert him. Leaving the piano room would have
been the honourable thing to do by Laynah, but he couldn’t bring himself to
do it. He was too enchanted by her, too enthralled by her warmth, and his
heart beat faster when she turned her face up to meet his gaze. Her features
glowed, radiating love and hope, and her delicate hand was small but strong
in his.
Eyes were the window to the soul, and he was helplessly lost in hers. He
could feel her desire for connection—it echoed his own, and he desperately

wanted to be that person for her, the one who would always be there by her
side.
Words failed him, and his reasons for travelling now seemed feeble. She
was persuasive, her pleas urging him to stay, and how could he not? His
resolve proved a weak thing, given that everything he’d ever wanted was
standing before him. Nothing would compel him to leave.
But then Laynah’s eyes changed, the green irises clouded with smoky ink,
the darkness encroaching on their brightness.
Fear seized him as he peered closer. He had to be mistaken.
I must have imagined it. It couldn’t possibly be…
Suddenly, her pupils flashed red. It was the briefest of glimmers, so faint
he might have missed it had he not been looking for it, but it was there.
No, no, no…
The realisation gutted him where he stood, and somewhere in the
universe, fate laughed mockingly. Right when his dreams had seemed
within reach, they were wrenched away.
His uncle had been right. History was repeating itself—just like Maisy,
Laynah was demon touched. It had taken longer to become noticeable, the
signs imperceptible until now.
Meanwhile, Laynah was speaking to him, her tone affectionate, but his
heart was pounding loudly in his ears, drowning at her words and the
promise of happiness that had once again eluded him. It felt like an eternity
passed as he stood there, helpless, trying to decide what to do. How long
would she have?
“Finnigan?” prompted Laynah.
He’d been silent too long, but telling Laynah was not an option. That
would only make it worse.
