THE RUGGER WOODEN BEAM.
That’s all she focused on anymore. If she stared long enough, she could
almost convince herself it was an intrinsic part of something nice.
Somewhere she was staying by choice. Maybe an old chalet or a rustic
cabin. A place she had booked online and was visiting with her friends.
That was a lie, of course. The beam wasn’t part of anything good. It was
holding together hell.
But she tried not to think of that part as she traced her eyes along the
beam, her pupils practically etching themselves into the tiny imperfections
of the wood. The occasional knot that spiraled into itself, like the madness
she so desperately wanted to forget. The cracks that split into splinters, like
offspring waiting to be released to fly into the world, not understanding
what they would be getting themselves into.
No idea that it wouldn’t be a world worth seeing.
Instead, they’d find themselves alone, with no way of knowing how to
get back to the warmth of their family. Alone, in pain, terrified over what
was happening to them. Wondering what they should have done differently.
And soon, they’d find themselves discarded with the rest of the rubbish.
Forgotten.
The screeching noise of metal scraping against porous concrete snapped
her out of her reverie. She spun her head to the side, a tangled mess of
brown hair landing in front of her left eye. The first time she heard that
sound, gooseflesh broke out all over her body. Not only fear but also
irritation. Nails on a chalkboard would be too kind of a comparison.
She longed to rewind her life a handful of days, or weeks, or however
long she’d been in this room. But there were no do-overs. The cat was out
of the bag.
Her eyes met the door, waiting, shaking, but, like a kiss from God
himself, the door handle never turned. It wasn’t time to face her fears again.
It was time to eat.
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. One more breath, this one
even deeper, causing a jolt of pain in her broken ribs, a reminder of the
terrible acts she’d endured. But she quickly shoved the thoughts out of her
head and looked to the door.
It was a heavy, green, and solid metal. The paint was peeling at the
handle where fingernails had scratched into it, clawing for escape. She’d
made those marks but could no longer remember when.
