Kim’s eyes filled with tears when she spotted Dave waiting
for her as she exited the TSA-secured area. She dropped her
bag when his arms tightened around her in the bear hug that she’d missed
more than she’d realized.
“Welcome to Tampa, Kimmy.” Only her brother used that nickname,
and she felt sharp pangs of regret for not accepting the invitation to visit
over fall break. The last time Finn guilts me into missing something I want
to do.
Kim swiped her eyes and beamed at her brother. “I’ve missed you!”
“You look good, sis. No problems with customs?”
She shook her head. “A weird look when I explained my lack of
luggage.” Dave chuckled as he grabbed her carry-on bag. Kim grasped his
waist and pressed against his side. “Thanks for meeting me—and for the
first-class ticket. I’m officially spoiled.”
“As opposed to just spoiled?” His mouth quirked with the hint of a
smile. “We’re looking forward to spending a lot of time with you. Lauren
set up a permanent guest room for you.”
“Seriously? I hope to get to know her better. It’s always such crazy
pandemonium when we’re all together.” Kim saw her brother’s deep brown
eyes spark with amusement.
“Plenty of quality time ahead. Hopefully, you won’t feel smothered by
all the attention.”
“Bring it on.” Kim chuckled. “Smother—unless I’m on campus.”
“We’ll see.” Dave’s non-committal smile reminded her how often he’d
run interference with her sometimes overprotective parents. If I’d talked
with him, maybe I wouldn’t have allowed my relationship with Finn to get
so unbalanced. At least not allow him to treat me like an afterthought for so
long.
She startled when Dave nudged her shoulder. “Earth to Kimmy. Heads
up—the drop-off and pick-up lanes are chaotic.”
“Sorry… jet lagged. Guess I zoned out there.” She glanced at him with
a rueful smile. “Didn’t realize we’d left the terminal.” She squinted against
the bright sun and fished her sunglasses from her purse. “The sun’s so
bright after gray Vancouver this morning.”
“Oh, so you’re not tuning me out?” Kim loved her brother’s teasing
laugh.
Kim grabbed his arm. “What? I’d never, Dave. Just preoccupied with
my to-do list before classes start next week…”
“You know Lauren and I will help any way we can. Don’t stress—apart
from traffic, life’s pretty relaxed around here.” He guided her across the
multi-lane passenger pick-up and drop-off zones to the short-term parking.
“Everyone’s eager to reach a destination and relax?” Kim looked at the
cars circling the garage, waiting for a car to vacate a space.
“Something like that.” Dave stopped by his SUV and clicked the locks
open. He set her bag in the back and opened the front passenger door. He
grabbed a package from the seat before assisting Kim as she climbed inside
the car.
