Old Highway 30
Alexander Kingston
I grip the leather of my steering wheel with white knuckles as Holly’s
voice rings through my car’s speakers. I tap down my brewing frustration
and anger, seeing as this is my sister and not my publicist. It’s a good thing
I love my sister, or else this might be a repeat of the diner experience earlier
this week. Granted, that experience is what got me into this mess in the first
place.

“Your pretty face and acting success won’t keep you out of the hot seat
this time, brother dearest. You know I love you too much to hold back the
punches. If you want to win and beat Chuck Hickson out for the lead in this
soccer movie, then you need to shape up. Your soccer skills, reputation, and
ability to work with people all need to improve if you want to be in this
movie. If that means going off into the woods to practice soccer for three
weeks while avoiding people by being at our cabin, then go do it!”
I flex my fingers, loosening my grip as I scoff. “There’s no way Chuck is
going to beat me for the part. Did you not see how much I made from my
last superhero movie, Hols? I’m the hottest thing in the acting scene right
now. They’d be fools to give the spot to someone else.”

“They wouldn’t be fools to give it to Chuck. He has several more
successful years of experience acting than you do, Alex. Not to mention he
actually knows how to play sports.”

She can’t see me roll my eyes, but she knows me well enough that I’m
pretty sure she can feel it. Thus her exasperated sigh as I reply, “You don’t
have to know how to play soccer to act in a soccer movie. It’s called acting
for a reason.”

“Well, why don’t you start acting like a team player and somebody your
co-stars actually want to be around?”
“What’s the point? We only need to look like friends on screen.” I
wouldn’t have enjoyed hanging out with any of my co-stars anyways. Their
ideas of fun were drinking the night away and spending money on
superfluous things. Things like overpriced ugly clothing, the newest trends,
and their date of the night they would take to a club to dance and waste
their time with.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m not above spending my money. But, I draw the
line at spending my money on alcohol. My parents forged that line in the
ground with their idiotic behavior when they were drunk. They’d come
home wasted and unable to do anything to take care of us. Rambling and
ranting about how they didn’t have enough money for the trends of the
moment, or railing at me for not being the best actor in the world.

It’s not
like they were around enough to actually see me act, or help me become
better. I may be standoffish and antisocial, but at least I don’t waste my
money on something that turns grown adults into incapable, neglectful
parents.
