The train was crowded that morning. The stench of damp clothing
on people who walked too long in the rain filled the small carriage
and pressed up against her face like a wall of sticky heat. It was mid-June,
and so far, the summer had been too long and too hot and too busy to be
anything but unenjoyable. Sitting on the too-old fabric seat of the train, Ana
couldn’t help but think this story she was chasing for her job with the city
newspaper was another dud. A puff piece that readers would undoubtedly
glance over on their way to the funnies and the daily horoscopes at the back
of the paper. A flop, just like all the other gossip and weirdo pieces she had
been tasked with chasing since the end of last autumn when she started
working at The City Herald.
It was still a job, however, and as boring and tedious as the stories at the
bottom of the barrel were, she could hardly say no to easy money. As her
editor and boss had told her countless times before, she needed to work her
way up the chain of command if she wanted to get anywhere in this
business. Deliver, deliver, deliver, right? All those prominent journalists had
paid their dues, worked their way up, and shown everyone what they were
capable of. They, too, had lived on too much coffee and very little sleep to
get where they are. Now it was her turn.
Flicking through the newspaper on her lap, Ana settled on the pink strip
at the back and folded the paper so that she could run her finger down the
columns.

A shrill metallic ring dragged her mind away from her horoscope and
back to reality. Her phone was buzzing and vibrating in her bag on the train
carriage floor beside her feet. There was always something a little
embarrassing about her phone being too loud in a place where people were
trying their very best not to make eye contact or talk to anyone, but she
needed her volume to be loud enough to hear it in any situation, just in case
the office called. Bringing the phone to her ear, Ana winced at the sound of
her editor’s voice on the other end, nasally and judgemental but sincere all
at the same time.
“Ana, darling, please tell me you have arrived safe and sound, little
dove?”
