My boots crunch on the frozen soil as I walk to the back of my work
truck to collect my gear. The scent of juniper and sage surrounds me, as
cold wind stings my nose, the light whisps of snow a promise of more to
come. I turn up the collar on my Carhartt coat and wait for Bob Ward’s
truck to pull up behind mine.
The white truck rocks to a stop on the uneven dirt road, before the
driver’s side door sporting the California State Parks logo opens, and Bob
climbs out. I give him a nod as a greeting before he turns to grab his parka
from the cab of his truck.
“Damn, it’s colder than a witch’s tit,” Bob says, zipping up his jacket.
“Couldn’t pick a warmer day to get this done?”
I don’t answer him because I figure the question is rhetorical. Bob is
one of those people who likes the sound of his own voice. He’s constantly
yammering away about anything and everything, most of which is bullshit.
I’ve gotten used to it over the last couple years, so now most of what he
says is just white noise to my ears.
“There I was, nice and warm in the office, before the call came in
asking for me to head up here.” He pauses his speech to fix his gloves.
“Didn’t we just check this station out a week ago?”
Again, I don’t bother answering him because he knows damn well it’s
been a month. He’s lucky I don’t have to check this station more often, as
this one isn’t in use and is monitored remotely. Coming out here is to check
the equipment and make sure all the info we have in the office matches up
to what the station is registering.
I heave the thirty pounds of my backpack over my shoulders and adjust
the straps in front of my chest. Carrying this weight isn’t a normal part of
my job—my tools, should I need them, are in my truck—but the walk to
and from the station is a little over a mile one way, so I’ve learned to carry
whatever I might need with me.
I turn to start walking downhill to Pedabe Creek when the sound of a
Ram V6 engine stops me in my tracks.
“Now what in the hell is he doing here?” Bob grumbles.
The dark green vehicle comes to a stop in front of my truck, boxing me
in, and the hair on the back on my neck stands on end. My fight or flight
response kicks in as I battle the feeling of being trapped. I close my eyes for
a beat and remind myself I’m safe. These guys aren’t a threat.
But past experience tells me to always trust my gut.
Jake Long jumps out of his truck before opening the back to his
extended cab and grabbing his rifle. My pulse spikes at the weapon in his
hands, but seeing a Fish and Wildlife warden with a gun shouldn’t come as
a shock.
