FIRE BURNED SOMEWHERE FAR AWAY. I HEARD THE SOUND OF THE
flames dancing and saw the weak orange light getting sucked by the
darkness around me. I felt it calling to me, calling to my blood—the
element was brimming with magic, same way that I was, but I couldn’t see
it. It was still so far away. Too far out of reach.
But even so, I searched for it.
A little light would help me see better. A little warmth would melt the
ice around my heart—I wasn’t even sure where it had come from. A little
strength would make putting one foot in front of the other a bit easier. I was
walking without direction, without aim, but I still had a tiny bit of hope in
my chest that I’d get there…wherever I was going. Wherever the fire was.
It was a long time before I saw his silhouette.
He was just as dark as the empty space around me, but the orange light
still revealed the shape of his shoulders. And I knew who he was. I knew it
in my bones, even though I’d only ever seen him once before.
John.
The name echoed in my head. I tried to hurry, tried to get to him, tried
to shorten the distance between us, but no matter how fast I moved I
couldn’t get closer. I couldn’t see his face, only make out the shape of his
limbs and head.
“You see me,” he said, and his whisper made the air in my throat catch,
and my limbs lock down, and my eyes freeze open. “Finally, you see me…”
I heard him as if he were standing behind me, but he wasn’t. He was
right there, his shadow barely ten feet away from me.
“John,” I tried to call, but only a whisper fell from my lips.
“We’re close, Estella,” he told me, and his voice was strange—so much
like Jack’s, but so different, too. Lighter. More breathless.
“Close to what?” I dared to ask, even though I thought I might already
know the answer.
“You have to find the wyrm.”
John disappeared before he finished speaking. His shadow fell away and
whatever nightmare I was trapped in this time made so little sense. My
other nightmares were always vivid—I saw clearly in them, heard in them,
felt in them. This one was so secretive. So dark.
“John!” I cried out, desperate to see him again, to talk to him, to
understand…
“Find the wyrm, Estella. We don’t have much time.”
His voice came from the left. I turned, but the darkness was too dark,
and I could barely make out the shape of his shoulders.
“There is no wyrm!” I thought I shouted. “Won’t you come closer? Let
me see you. Let me—”
“Find the wyrm.”
