Holly
I’m so tired, but it’s just another day in the office—the sheriff’s office. Being
the first female ever appointed in North Star means I’m constantly proving
myself. I’m in here before everyone else and only leave well after everyone
else is gone, except those on night patrol. I’ve only had the job a few months,
and I’m still surprised that the election went the way it did. We have a
population of nine hundred people and five hundred of them voted for me. It
had been a close race, but ultimately, they chose me. I make sure every day
I’m the best sheriff the town has ever seen.

The town is so small that the sheriff’s office is also the jail. My office
overlooks the few cells in the building. When you think of old-timey cop
shows with two desks in the room and then the cells, that’s about what I’m
working with. While we have a bit more to the building with interrogation
rooms and my office, we are still small. Except for the town drunk having to
sleep it off, there’s rarely anyone in the holding cells.
I’m presently talking to Deputy Johnson about some cattle that got loose
last night. It had been dangerous because people didn’t see them in the road
until they were right up to them. I look up when a man walks in. I instantly
size him up like I do anyone else, even the people I’ve known most of my
life.

He’s a good foot taller than me, wearing worn cowboy boots and a flannel
shirt with snug-fitting Wranglers. He also has a worn, tan work coat on with a
ragged backpack slung over his shoulder. At first, a hat is hiding his hair.
Then, he takes it off and his dark hair is a mess—but in a totally sexy way.
It’s a bit longer with a sweet brown hue that makes me want to run my fingers
through it. I shake the thought from my mind as he walks over. Under his
gaze, I feel very exposed. That rarely happens and I’m caught off guard by it.
Both Johnson and I stop talking as he approaches. Not many people stop in.
They call for help, they get arrested, but just stopping in isn’t a regular thing.
“I’m here to speak with Holly?” he announces, his deep voice breaking
the silence. Johnson and I are both studying him. He glances down at his
hand, holding a clipped newspaper, and I know before he even says what he’s
here for.

“I’m Holly.” His hazel eyes meet mine. He has a weathered look about
him, with slight wrinkles around his eyes. He holds out his hand, and I shake
it feeling a slight shock to my palm. I can’t help but wonder what that
could’ve been. He doesn’t react, however. So, I ignore it and move on. Maybe
I just imagined it.

“I’m Drew Watson,” he says, holding my hand a second longer than
necessary. “I’m here about the ad you have in the paper for a ranch hand.”
“Let’s go to my office,” I suggest. “We can talk in there.”
