It’s funny how some people say women are too emotional. Just
because I was crying, it didn’t make me too emotional. Crying was
just an easy way to express one simple emotion—sadness.
There were far worse ways to express emotions. It wasn’t like I was
punching strangers in bars or trying to cheat on my wife with an intern, like
a man would.
But that was the ironic thing. At some point in human history, men
somehow managed to successfully rebrand both angry and horny as not
emotions, so they didn’t count. And in my experience, men were always
one or the other. Or both at the same time.
Right now, the man sitting opposite me was the latter. I didn’t even have
to guess. It was written all over him.
He swallowed and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, smearing
eggs from the diner’s daily breakfast special into the rough skin of his
cheeks, and leered at me. “You need to eat, Anna. Come on, sweetie. Don’t
be so emotional. Stop crying, be a good girl, and eat up.”
“I can’t,” I sobbed. “I’m just too sad, Mr. Tully. Honestly, the thought of
eating anything is making me feel sick. Besides,” I added, wiping the trail
of tears on my cheeks. “I can’t eat this. My eggs have gone cold.”
“Well, why don’t you ask the waitress for extra scrambled eggs?”
I blinked. “But…that’s just not possible. I don’t think they can get any
more scrambled than they already are.” I burst into tears again.
“Oh, little girl,” he crooned, his eyes glazing over as he looked down on
me, slumped in the booth. Mr. Tully was a big guy, tall with solid shoulders,
carrying a little fat around the middle, but he bore the weight comfortably
and confidently. He gave off a “good ‘ol country boy” vibe. In his late
forties, maybe, he had sharp, pale blue eyes that were clever, focused, but
glazed with lust. His thinning light-brown hair was carefully combed back
from his ruddy face, and he wore ironed blue jeans and a pristine red flannel
shirt. “I know you’re sad. But try and think of this as a blessing. God works
in mysterious ways. If your boyfriend hadn’t dumped you out here, you
wouldn’t have met me.”
“I guess.” Another tear ran down my cheek. “It just fell apart so fast,
Mr. Tully. I don’t understand how this has all happened.”
“Oh, I know, baby. I know. This whole situation must be so scary for
you.”
“It is.” I let out a sob. “I’m glad you understand. I’m so scared.”
“It’s okay. I’m here now.” He smiled down at me. “I can look after you.
It’s not safe for a girl like you to be on her own, you know that, right?”
I nodded, pressing my lips together. I held my hands in my lap, my
fingers fiddling compulsively with the hem on my oversized knitted
sweater. It swamped me, making me look far smaller than I actually was. “I
know. I know about all the evil out here in California. But now I’m stuck
here,” I said, my lip wobbling. “I’ve never felt so alone.”
