An Unexpected Encounter

CAIT
I’m walking across Congress Park on my way to work, thoughts filled
with all the things I need to do afterwards—homework for my Instructional
Design class, dealing with the leaky shower in my apartment, ordering more
groceries—when I nearly crash into the man walking in front of me.
Jerking to a stop, I stumble forward, my hand shooting out for balance.
Without thinking, I brace myself on his chest for a moment, just long
enough to steady myself. As I step back and see his shocked expression,
blood rushes to my cheeks.

I can’t believe I just touched this complete stranger, who is looking at me
as if I just sprouted three heads.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I sputter, my face on fire with embarrassment. “I
wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Dark brown eyes narrow at me, deep creases forming on the man’s
forehead. He doesn’t speak, just stares at me, which makes me even more
flustered and uncomfortable.

Maybe he’s offended by me touching him, even though it was completely
harmless. Or he’s annoyed that I’m delaying him from an important
appointment.

“I’m sorry,” I repeat, my words coming quickly. “I didn’t mean to touch
you—I was off balance for a second. But I’ll get out of your way. Again,
sorry about the near collision. I’ll pay closer attention from now on.”
His expression has transformed from shock to something darker,
something more sinister. All the lines and angles of his face sharpen,
casting shadows under his eyes and under his cheekbones. Even though he
hasn’t said a word to me yet, it’s clear he’s not just annoyed; he’s angry.
My heart trips, a stumbled jitter in my chest. This strange man is sending
some serious bad-news vibes. “Uh…” My words get jumbled, and I cast
about for a way to get out of this. “I’ll be going now. Have a nice day. Sorry
about everything.”
I start backing away, not taking my eyes off of the man. His gaze is
focused on me, not like a regular person, but like a predator would. A wave
of fear hits me, and I shift my purse behind my back, holding the strap with
a death grip.

“Wait.” The voice is like stones scraping over each other, rough and gritty.
He clamps his hand around my wrist, an iron vise keeping me still.
“How did you see me?“ His hand tightens. It’s not painful, at least not yet,
but he puts enough pressure into his hold to make it a threat. I go stock still,
torn between trying to yank away and possibly breaking my wrist, or
staying and trying to reason with him.
Although, based on his question, there’s a very good chance he might be
crazy.

“I… I saw you like anyone else.” There’s a wobble in my voice I don’t
like. I don’t want to come across as scared, like someone easily intimidated.
“No.” It’s a growl. “You shouldn’t be able…” His eyes blaze into me,
hard and intense, almost like he’s trying to reach inside of me and tear the
answer from my head. “How? Who are you?”
Heart jumping like a hyped up rabbit, I give my wrist an experimental tug.
Nope. Not going anywhere.
