Barnham Green, Somerset, 1944
It was the last day of February, and bitingly cold. Anne Black tried not to
shiver as she stood next to the headmaster, George Mayhew, while her friend
and colleague, Belinda Frobisher, kept an eye on her class of little ones who
were rather sullenly awaiting their turn to be seen by the district nurse. She
watched as Nurse Mary Higgins combed through their hair and felt the
ominous itch in her own which she had to force herself to ignore. None of the
children liked being seen by the ‘Nit Nurse’, as they called Mary, but with so
many of them packed into the overcrowded classrooms, it only took one
louse-ridden head for the infestation to spread right through the junior school
and across the entire village.
‘I wish the school board would give us the money to build another two
classrooms,’ muttered George, digging his scarred and withered hand into his
jacket pocket. ‘We’re overstretched as it is with so many evacuees, and it’s
hardly surprising we’ve got all sorts of health problems to deal with.’
‘At least we cleared up the impetigo and ringworm those poor London
children arrived with, and that’s down to the good country air, a decent diet
and proper hygiene.’ Anne smiled at him, able now to look into the firedamaged side of his face without feeling the initial twist of pity that had
previously made every conversation awkward. ‘Let’s just hope we can clear
this quickly before the nursery is infested as well. I don’t fancy having to
treat my two’s hair; not with them both going through a tricky stage at the
moment.’
She had a brief vision of trying to deal with three-year-old Rose’s thick,
dark curls as well as Emily’s, and the tantrums that would no doubt follow.
Emily might only be just over a year and a half, but she’d quickly learned
from her sister that tears and temper could quite often be the path to getting
her own way if Anne was tired after a long, busy day.
As the last child endured being examined and doused with DDT powder,
Belinda chivvied the others outside to the playground where they
immediately let off steam by racing about and shouting at one another.
