One Year Later
Sometime after midnight on the two-year anniversary of Carter’s
accident, a figure tiptoed into Robby’s room, curled up on the other
side of the bed, and fell asleep. Lorna’s familiar perfume wafted
through the air over the mattress, a stormy-rose she’d bought from an online
dealer. Her childlike snores quieted, leaving Robby to acknowledge the
density of the dark. She hadn’t been able to sleep, either. And she didn’t
exactly have her own mother’s bedroom down the hall, a warm protector to
save her from her anxiety. She was forty-nine years old—a full-blown
widow. She felt so alone.
At six, Robby’s alarm clock blared. Lorna groaned and tucked herself
beneath the comforter. “Why so early?”
Robby had learned from her grief therapist that it was best to keep a
schedule. To attend to your needs diligently. To press forward, no matter
what. But more often than not, Robby turned off the alarm and slept till
eight. Today, it was the same story. Today, she collapsed back on the pillow
and didn’t rise until sunlight burned through the drapes and drew her to her
feet.
Downstairs, Robby brewed a pot of coffee and listened for Lorna’s
footsteps. She’d promised to join her for breakfast in a few minutes but had
seemingly fallen asleep seconds after Robby had disappeared. As the coffee
percolated, Robby clacked her fingernails across the counter, watching her
engagement ring catch the light and toss it to the far wall. She’d read online
that some widows liked to remove their wedding rings from time to time to
get accustomed to life “after.” She wasn’t even close to trying that out.
As she poured the coffee, Robby’s phone buzzed with a call from Mike.
She answered it immediately.
“Hey,” he said, his voice warm. “How are you holding up?”
Robby leaned against the counter and watched a cardinal and a robin flit
about on the low-hanging branch outside the bay window. They didn’t
acknowledge one another.
“Oh, you know,” she said.
Mike let silence brew between them as though he expected her to say
more. Robby hated this most about being a widow. People expected
something of you. Maybe they wanted you to say something profound, to
have learned something, but Robby had nothing to offer.
After a moment, Mike explained that, yet again, he and his wife had
rented the same beautiful vacation home in Siasconset for the summer.
They planned to come out earlier than other years—by the first of May.
“That’s something to look forward to,” Robby said, surprised that she
really meant it.
“Get ready for long afternoons on the veranda,” Mike said. “Aurora
can’t wait to see you again.”
“Send her my love, won’t you?”
“Of course.”
Robby inhaled sharply, caught yet again on the same question she’d
never allowed herself to ask Mike. One that involved what-ifs.
“I still can’t believe I went to DC on that silly work trip,” she stuttered.
“I can’t help but think if I hadn’t gone…”
“You can’t think like that,” Mike assured her. “You’re one of the most
brilliant translators out there. You deserved that invitation to the Capitol.
