It was four in the morning when the strange girl appeared, enticing Hamish
when she knew she could. Four in the morning comes after three in the
morning, which everyone knows is the witching hour. If you are waking at
four in the morning, you might be waking up to find some of that three in
the morning stuff still in progress.
Four in the morning is a desperate hour, the time when anxious
dreamers are shaken out of sleep by an unseen hand that continues to hold
their heart so they can’t go to sleep again, the hour when partiers who have
not lost consciousness make that last bad decision that may bring temporal
or permanent destruction to their lives, the hour when you awake to a world
so quiet that you think that maybe the zombie apocalypse has happened and
you are alone.
So, you check your social media and see that no, you are not alone,
the world has gone on without you and is humming and chattering away.
Then you look at the feed of your crush and on impulse, you like a picture
of theirs from four months ago, something you would never have done were
it not for the insanity of four in the morning.
Hamish has to drag himself out of bed at four in the morning to go
to hockey practice for three hours before school. Tall and broad shouldered,
he has the look of a star athlete and could have excelled in any sport, but
hockey is the one he fell in love with. Early mornings are as much a part of
hockey as ice skates. His mom used to pile him into the car with a
Starbucks coffee in her hand and a coat thrown over her pajamas for his
early morning practices when he was growing up. She would trundle into
the ice rink with all the other hockey moms and dads and pretend later
when they saw each other at a normal time, that no one had seen her with
bed-head and wearing a plaid flannel onesie watching her son skate.
Now, in his final year of high school, Hamish has to get himself to
practice because he has moved away from home to attend an elite hockey
program in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada.
This is the one of the primary recruitment programs for the NHL.
Twice a day, he practices with mostly Canadian boys who could skate
almost as soon as they could walk and are the rock stars of their home town.
Hamish is used to having girls follow him around. He has two things
going for him that makes him irresistible to girls – he is very good looking,
with a shredded physique and chiseled features, and he is a top-level
