I barely suppressed a groan as the latest guests waltzed by, acting like they
owned the place. A couple of older women who turned up their noses at me.
I couldn’t decide if it was the neckline of my dress or the fact that I had the
audacity to own an inn while being a woman, but it hardly mattered.
It amounted to the same thing; people either hated me or were intrigued
by me.

I knew their type. They thought that them not having to work for a living
made them better than me. They, like so many other people who deigned to
stay at my Inn, thought that they were above me and treated me as their
servant. If it wasn’t for my curse, I would have snapped a long time ago.
Hells, if it wasn’t for my curse, I would have left a long time ago.

The Rose Lily Inn, in its quaint forgotten corner of Somerset, had called
to me. It had felt like home when I first stepped in the doors. It was
supposed to be my salvation, but under my management, it had grown and
changed to be my cage. Now, the Inn I had been so enchanted by went by a
new name, The Sapphire Siren Inn, named for the monster that people said
ran the place. Me.

I had tried to keep the old name alive, but the townsfolk were always
whispering about the sapphire haired harlot on the hill. When the men
started paying attention to me, it didn’t matter that I had no interest in them,
the women started calling me all sorts of names. I used to hum while I
worked, sometimes even sing. That was probably where the children got the
siren idea from. The women of the town said I drew their men in. It
mattered little how untrue it was, they believed what they wanted and
started calling me the Sapphire Siren. After a while, I embraced the name.
It turned out to not be bad for business.

The people that came to stay did so for one of two reasons, necessity or
curiosity. I liked the former guests much better than the latter. Those who
came from curiosity came to gawk at and whisper about me. No one knew
why they were drawn there, even I didn’t fully understand it, but most
nights, the Inn wasn’t without guests.

I used to enjoy running the Inn, used to sing to myself while working and
bake cinnamon rolls for the guests, but everything changed after that fateful
date, after the curse struck.

The first year of the curse had been an unbearable nightmare with
Alanna’s murder, quickly followed by Zara’s. For a long time, their deaths
plagued my memories, haunted by dreams. Thankfully, time dulled the pain.

It had been a year now since Zara’s murder, and things had gotten easier. I
formed a nice routine for myself and again allowed myself to put them both
out of my mind as best I could. To my surprise and relief, since Zara, I
hadn’t felt so much as a stirring of the curse.
