London
April, 1817 – Midseason
Lady Elsbeth Rawley allowed her partner to escort her back to Dowager
Countess Astor, who was not only an instructor at the Belinda School for
Curious Ladies, but also her mother. With her mother were the two who
governed the school she loved, her cousin James Huntington, otherwise
known as the Duke of Northwick, and his wife, Joanna, who was
resplendent in a striking red gown, her usual single black curl falling to her
shoulder.

After thanking Mr. Lansing for the dance, Elsbeth studied him as he
walked away before turning to her ever-watchful parent and family
members.
Joanna winked at her. “And is Mr. Lansing a mudstone or more
fluorite?”

She gave the question some thought. Categorizing the men she met by
the rock found in England helped her keep them straight in her judgment. “I
haven’t decided. I believe he may be a mix of obsidian and linsenerz.”
Her mother’s blonde brows rose. “Now that’s a new combination.”

She looked over the room, finding the man in question. “Yes, well, as I
just met him a fortnight ago, I have not had much on which to judge as of
yet.”

James frowned, his blue gaze incredulous. “Tell me you do not compare
the gentlemen of the ton to rocks.”
She glanced at the laughter in Joanna’s hazel eyes before giving James a
cheeky grin. “But I do. If they must compare us to flowers, I see no reason
not to compare them to rocks.”

Her cousin opened his mouth to object, no doubt for some length, but
she was anxious to exit the room, so she quickly addressed her mother. “I’m
going to join Dory on the terrace for some cooler air.”

Her mother perused the ballroom, her gaze stopping on Lady Dorothea
Ansley standing next to the terrace doors in a pretty sky-blue dress that set
off her mahogany hair. Then Lady Astor’s focus moved across the room and
once again stopped as she narrowed her eyes at Alice Ansley, Countess
Preston and frowned, never happy with the woman’s lack of watchfulness
over Lady Dorothea, her daughter. “Very well, but do be back inside before
the next dance ends or I’ll come find you.”

Elsbeth winked, a habit she’d copied from Joanna. “I know you will.”
Joanna tapped her on the arm with her fan, stopping her. “Tell Lady
Dorothea her book by Thomas Hobbes arrived yesterday. I haven’t been
able to find her all evening.”

She wasn’t surprised. Dory tended to stay with Sophie, who willingly
listened to her ramble on and on. “I will.” Giving her mother a quick smile,
she made her way to Dory, not a little puzzled as to why there was a
gathering of the Curious Ladies in the middle of a ball.

“Come.” Dory hooked her arm in hers. “Eleanor called the meeting. It
must be important. She’s already waiting with Sophie.”
