Now
The first memory I have is of my parents being killed in front of my
eyes.

It isn’t something that I want to remember, but no one chooses the
things that stay in the forefront of their minds.
I existed before that day … but my life ended that day too.
I was taken from my home, thrown into a cell, and was forced to fight
for my survival. I became theirs. A puppet for them to use. A servant.
Everything after that day has been nothing but pain and misery.
It’s all I know now.

But it isn’t all I’ve ever known.
There is more to my story. More memories that linger beneath the
surface. But those happy moments I once spent with my family are hidden,
buried far away in the abyss of my mind.
There can be no more past. No more history. There is only now and
whatever my Masters tell me to do.

I sit on my bed, staring at the concrete floor under my cold, tingly
toes, wondering when they will let me out again. I hate this place. This room,
which isn’t really a room—it’s more a cell—is where they keep me when
they don’t want me around the house. When they’d rather I disappear.
It’s okay, though, because I’m used to it by now.
I am a servant. I am theirs to command. I abide by their rules. Their
wishes are my desires. I live to see them happy. In fact, it is the only reason
I’m still alive.

I do what I’m told, simply because that is what I know. I know only
how to submit and serve.
They say I should be grateful that they let me live. Over and over
again … every day since I came here. And I think I am. I try to show it to
them by doing my best with all my chores every single day.
But today is different.

Any other day, they would let me out of my cell at precisely 8 a.m. to
cook breakfast for my Master and his family and companions, and to provide
other services. But it is far past that time now, and they still haven’t come.
I don’t have a clock in my room, but I know the times I get up and go
to bed by heart. Everything is always the same here.
Except now.
When the lock on my door is turned and my door creaks open, I look
up.

Finally.
Eyes peering through the gap tell me it’s time.
So I drop off the bed and go to my knees. Lower. As far as I can go.
My hands are outstretched in front of me, lying on the cold, harsh floor, just
like my face. The iciness creeps into my skin, right where my cheeks hit the
surface. It comforts me a little.
