Carter
I stood in the living room of my penthouse and watched the
movers take out my boxes one by one. Shaun sent me a walk-through video
of the house, and I fell in love with it. I was happy that my sister-in-law,
Ava, was an interior decorator because I would hire her to help me pick out
furniture and décor as soon as I got to California.

“Well, this is it.” Auntie Fran hugged me tightly. “You better keep in
touch, young man.”
“You know I will, Auntie Fran. You’re not mad that I’m moving, are
you?”
She brought her hand up to my face. “Not at all. Although, I will miss
you. I think, in some way, your mother would be proud of you for doing
this. I know she hated the fact that she never told you about your siblings.
But she never wanted you to know that your father was a drug addict who
never had plans on sticking around for you or the other two children he
fathered.”

“It doesn’t matter anymore. I found out the truth, and now I’ll be where
I belong, with my brothers and family. Shit. That came out wrong, Aunt
Fran. You know you’re my family, and I’m grateful for everything you did
for my mother and me.”
“I know that, Carter. I’m not offended in the least. You belong with your
siblings. I love you.”
“I love you too, Auntie Fran.” I hugged her one last time before she left
my penthouse.

“Mr. Kind, we loaded all the boxes into the truck. Is there anything
else?” one of the men asked.
“No. That’s it.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out some cash.
“Thank you for your help.” I handed him a sizeable tip.
“Thank you, sir. We should have your things to your new home in a few
days.”

After they left, I walked around my penthouse one last time. Grabbing
my two large suitcases, I took them to the elevator and pressed the button.
When the doors opened, I stepped inside, and a smile crossed my lips as
they slowly closed.

When I reached the lobby, I stepped outside the doors and saw a black
limousine at the curb. The window slowly rolled down, and Shaun smiled at
me.
“What’s up, my man?” he asked.
His driver climbed out, grabbed my luggage, and threw them in the
back of the limo. Shaun opened the door and moved over as I climbed
inside.

“How are you, Shaun?” We hugged.
“I’m great. How are you feeling?”
“Health-wise or leaving North Carolina-wise?” I smirked.

“Both.”
“I feel great.” I grinned.
“That’s good. I’m happy to hear it.”
“Nobody suspects I’m moving to Los Angeles, do they?” I asked.
“Nope. In fact, they’re all pissed off because I told them someone
already Airbnb’d the house.”
