Wyoming
Jillian walked through the door of a roadside restaurant situated just
inside the city limits of Pinedale, Wyoming, population 2,262. The
aroma of apple pie greeted her, as did Margaret the waitress (according to
her nametag), who may or may not be a shapeshifter. Jillian’s synesthesia
registered low octave chamber music in her presence, but the waitress
emitted no scents, colors, shapes, or numbers. At least none that pinged
Jillian’s neurological condition.

No bloodstains smudged Margaret’s teeth, and the real-life scent of
entrails did not taint her breath. Margaret looked too prim to be
moonlighting as a stripper, but maybe she was going for a wolf-dressed-asa-grandmother vibe. Or maybe, unlike Trudy in rural North Dakota,
Margaret was just a human waitress wearing a tidy apron, a gray bun, and
hustling for tips. Jillian bore a few crosses in life, but thanks to a modest
trust fund courtesy of the Rosalind Project, at least she’d never have to wait
tables to pay the bills. That money was just about the only good thing those
fuckers ever did for her.

Jackson would disagree, of course. The secret bioinformatics research
group had their claws knuckle-deep in him now, with their blatant bribes of
an in-facility apartment, a cell phone and laptop, Netflix and free beer. All
they asked in return was to crack open his weirdo brain like a walnut—
metaphorically, she hoped. Jackson seemed happy to oblige them. Someday
soon, Jillian would have to reconcile his recent decision to embrace those
shady fuckers, and while she was at it, she should come to terms with
Max’s death, too.

Not today, Satan. Not today.
Cardboard jack-o’-lanterns leered from the windows, and orange crepe
paper chains dangled from the ceiling. The silly decorations made her
happy. She freaking loved Halloween.
“Coffee? Soda?” Margaret asked once Jillian picked a booth.
“Coffee, please. Lots of cream and sugar. And a giant slice of that apple
pie I’m smelling. I don’t even need to look at the menu.”
Margaret winked. “Smart call. Always go for dessert first.”
Jillian tapped a ragged fingernail against the table and gazed at the smalltown street beyond the taped decorations, thinking about Sister Colette’s
cryptic words. “All that changed when you walked through the door.”
She’d been referring to demon battles, a conversation the feisty nun had
bizarrely initiated on her own. Afterward, she’d zipped her lips like a
coroner’s body bag, refusing to elaborate until Jillian had “settled into her
new home.”

Wherever the hell that might end up being. Jillian hadn’t even decided to
stick around yet, but Sister Colette seemed to believe she would.
Apparently, her new home was somewhere close by. Was the nun crazy, or
was she getting divine tip-offs? Either way, Jillian found herself intrigued
by the woman. An official servant of the Catholic church could offer
valuable insights about demons; one who claimed to be specifically charged
with battling demons, even more so.
