LANI
“You’re staring again,” whispered Sadie, effectively jolting me out of
my gaze which has been dreamily focused on the side of Nate’s face
for the last few minutes. “You keep that up, and everyone’s going to know
exactly what you’re thinking about.”
I groan to myself as I realize that I haven’t heard a single word of Mr.
Kelly’s teaching on Hamlet. While it is quite normal to be staring at Nate like
a creeper, the tiredness I am feeling is not helping with my current situation. I
feel like I can’t concentrate on anything. This past week has been hell. While
life at home is always somewhat unpleasant, lately it has gotten worse.
My
mom has been off her medicine and more erratic than usual. For some reason
she has decided that she doesn’t need to sleep, instead coming home from
work and rearranging the house, painting the walls, and making a noisy,
awful mess instead. Of course, this isn’t helping me get the sleep I need to
learn anything at school. With it being our senior year, I really need to do
well so that I can get into college and away from this place altogether.
I am shocked out of my musings by a sharp elbow in the upper arm. Mr.
Kelly is looking at me expectantly and I side-eye Sadie for help. She shakes
her head at me as the teacher says, “Are you back with us, Miss West?”
My face heats up as I hear some titters from fellow students and Josie
McCauley, resident mean girl and lead cheerleader, rolls her eyes at me.
“Um, sorry Sir, could you please repeat that?” I stammer out. As he begins to
answer the sound of the bell rings clear, and I breathe a sigh of relief.
Among the noise of students chatting while packing their bags, I hear,
“Lani can you please stay behind for a moment?” My heart sinks as Sadie
gives me a sympathetic smile and tells me she’ll see me in the cafeteria. I nod
at her as I make my way to the front of the classroom. Mr. Kelly has always
been a favorite teacher of mine; I love English, and his way of teaching is
engaging and fair.
“Is everything alright with you, Lani?” he asks when I stop in front of
him. “I can’t help but notice you have been unusually distracted lately. Has
something happened at home? Your mother well?”
The teaching staff at Oak Ridge High know about mom’s schizophrenia
as there have been many ups and downs over the past years. I try to keep
much of it to myself but occasionally the school has had to become involved.
“Oh no, Sir, all is fine. I am just a little tired is all. Nothing that some
decent sleep won’t fix,” I reply, trying to sound a lot more confident than I
actually feel. Mr. Kelly eyes me warily, and I realize I’m not fooling him.
