The air was brisk, and each breath Lucas Trapper took was expelled in a
puff of chilled smoke as he lifted the axe and brought it down against
the wood on the tree stump. He had to split enough to last until after the
coming snowstorm. The Yukon River was frozen solid, and in the wilds of
Alaska, that could mean days or up to a week before he would be able to get
outside again.

Luckily, the dogs had their own barn area with individual pens he’d built
filled with fresh, warm hay. He could get to it from the long, sealed hallway
he had built from his cabin to their enclosure. That way, he could make sure
the potbellied stove in the corner that kept them warm always had wood, just
like his own heating system. All his animals had their own enclosures, as they
were all needed for his survival as a homestead owner.

Trapper, as he was called, loved his way of life. The only links to the
outside world were his ham radio and when he took his wares into the small
town of Old Crow to be shipped off to the mainland. Living off the grid was a
life choice and not for everyone.
He hunted and fished, grew his own food, and made sure he had enough
stored away for him, his dogs, and animals when the long winter came. His
closest neighbor was about 150 miles away, the town even farther. The
silence was almost its own perfect song. He lived in peace, and nothing from
the outside world bothered him…
What the…?

Trapper heard the engines long before he saw the plane break through the
clouds. He knew that sound, and it wasn’t good. They whined as if in pain
before cutting off. He watched the plane jolt and tremble, then heard the
sound again as the pilot managed to pull it out of the spiral descent. But
Trapper could see it was already too late. They were going to crash. At least
this maneuver would give them a fighting chance to survive.
The plane went behind the tree line, and he didn’t hear the crash, so he
knew it wasn’t close. He would have to follow the smoke to find survivors, if
there were any. He hated this, the interruption into his life, but he wasn’t a
man who wouldn’t act. It had been built into him to be that way. Honor and
duty had been honed into his very core.
“Fuck.”

Trapper muttered the one word as he trudged through the snow to get his
dogs and harness them to his sled before he got supplies, extra furs for
warmth, and brandy. For them or for him would be decided when he got there

and depending what he saw. He looked up at the sky knowing bad weather
would be coming in for at least the next twelve hours. Trapper hoped he
could get there and back before the storm hit.
