The look of shock at the realization that they’d been mortally wounded
was something a warrior never forgot. Fighting to the death was Torac
Bratton’s life, however, it didn’t make witnessing a man’s last breath any
easier.
His opponent’s eyes lost focus as the life ebbed out of him, the sword
falling from his hand he stumbled backward. Dropping to his knees he
crumpled from the severity of his wound until finally collapsing forward
onto the muddy ground.
One last exhalation and then stillness.
The scene was etched in Torac’s mind as he sunk down into the water.
Torac kept his eyes open while holding his breath as if it were possible to
erase the picture from his mind.
When his lungs protested, he remained just a bit longer before surfacing
from the frigid water of the creek and inhaling loudly.
The soreness from days of riding and sleeping outdoors disappeared for
a few moments as he stood in the chest-high water while scanning the bank.
His clothes remained atop a rock, where he’d left them. Nearby his huge
warhorse, Brutus, nibbled on green grasses, his tail swishing from side to
side.
It was times like this that he felt the overwhelming loneliness of his life
as a warrior. As of late, a stirring within had made him more reflective than
usual. Perhaps it was the news that his half-sister, Cait, and her husband,
Struan Ross, were expecting their second child. He was almost ten years
older than Cait and had yet to sire a bairn.
That the last battle had left him so bothered was a sign that perhaps his
time was up. When a warrior lost perspective, it could be deadly. There was
a longing that Torac couldn’t place.
Was it time for him to leave the laird’s guard and begin a new life?
At the thought Torac groaned and dived back under the water. When he
came back out this time, he walked toward the bank. It was time to mount
and once again patrol the farmlands ensuring all was right before returning
to the guard post.
He’d asked to work alone and sort out things. The other leaders had not
hesitated in agreeing as it was in everyone’s best interest for him to be
focused.
Since he and the other leaders had arrived in the southwestern corner of
South Uist with a group of guardsmen, they’d battled against rebel villagers
and encroachers who’d arrived by boat. But in the last few months, they’d
mostly dealt with arguments between landowners.
The constables of the two villages they protected usually saw to the
disagreements unless they got out of hand, at which point, Torac and his
men were called to intervene.
