Brielle surveyed the ladies sitting around her, each one perched prettily
with backs straight, their colorful skirts splayed in neat arcs. The
most beautiful young ladies at court, the wealthiest, from the most powerful
families; that was what her ladies’ court was famed for across the land.
Dare she say, across the kingdoms. And why not? Surely no other kingdom
had a ladies’ court that could compare.
Of course, none of her ladies were as beautiful or wealthy or powerful as
she. A princess by birth and soon to be queen by marriage, her ladies were
poor imitations, mere pretty adornments to her great destiny. Brielle looked
on as the ladies shuffled their playing cards and nervously peered at each
other.

“I am aging prematurely waiting for you to make your move, Lady
Priya,” Brielle chided.
Lady Priya quickly selected a card from her hand and tossed it into the
center of the picnic rug. It was a perfect spring day with a wisp of wind that
would not undo the intricate design of her hair, so upon waking, Brielle had
announced the idea of a garden tea party.
The scene was picturesque, sitting by the calm blue lake on the
manicured lawn in front of the castle, in view of every courtier to pass by
and admire. A servant stood behind her holding a delicate lace-trimmed
parasol to shade her fine milky skin from the bite of the sun. The other
ladies’ skin was of no concern to her. If they became too much kissed by
the sun, all the better.

The ladies threw their cards down one by one in quick succession so as
not to ire her, but on her turn, Lady Evelyn hesitated. Presented to the King
only a month ago, she was the newest and youngest member of Brielle’s
ladies’ court, being only fifteen years old. She was a country girl, coming
from an estate in—Brielle did not know or care, to be honest. What was
important was that she did not come from noble lineage. Her family had
somehow come into a large sum of wealth, and so her presentation at court
had been bought. While that made her less desirable, less worthy, and well
—less in every way—her wealth did make her notable. At least as notable
as a speck on the horizon. Her family could prove important one day, so it
was prudent for Brielle to invite her into her inner circle. To bend and fold
her into place, like a handkerchief one keeps in a pocket and only pulls out
when needed.

“The game takes some thought, Lady Evelyn, but not usually this much,”
Brielle said sweetly.

Lady Evelyn lifted her eyes to Brielle’s sharp gaze and selected a card
from her hand. Brielle exhaled a breath of exasperation as Lady Evelyn
threw it on top of the pile of cards. Selecting a card from her own hand,
Brielle tossed it onto the pile before her attention caught on two
approaching noblemen.
