“Do you have to write everything down?”
In my hand was a new Pentel mechanical pencil with .7mm super
polymer lead. Edgy black and silver— finding an Office Depot that carried
it had taken a special trip. With a fine point, good definition, and erasable, it
was also more expensive.

“Can’t we just talk?”
“Sure.” With a sigh, the pencil and notebook went into my uniform
pocket. I folded my hands on my lap. “Sure we can”
The doctor let out a breath.
Everything about Dr. Andrews indicated comfort. Under the
obligatory white cotton coat was a lightweight woolen sweater with a nice
cut and fabric blend. I like clothing—even men’s—so his outfit stood out to
me. While you might his chinos casual at first, a second glance indicated a
sharp, pressed crease on the front and an air of expense. His getup was
rounded off with a pair of hand-stitched leather loafers.

We were in his office, and the shelves were lined with books and the
occasional watercolor. “I like that painting on your wall, Doctor. India ink
on paper, I believe.” It was a rustic country scene.
“One of my patients made that.”
“Nice.”
“He’s no longer with us.”
“Oh, sorry.”

The doctor shrugged. He sat in an oversized leather swivel chair,
tilted forward, hands folded together on the desk. Despite being outwardly
calm, I suspected the man was experiencing some anxiety.
“Coffee?” he asked.
“That would be nice, thank you.”
Standing, he went to the carafe maker on a back shelf, took down a
clean cup, and poured the drink.
“Cream; sugar?”
“No, black.”

The coffee routine felt like a spacer, allowing the doctor to clear his
head and think about what to say.
Handing me the cup, he returned to his chair. After smoothing his
glossy silver hair, he ran his fingers back and forth across the edge of his
desk, like a carpenter checking his work. “So…” he began and stopped.
“So.” I responded helpfully and sipped my coffee.

“So, the kid was brought into the clinic late yesterday. I was about
to go off my shift, but his leg was broken, and they wanted me to look at
him before putting on a cast.”
“Broken leg.” I was itching to take some notes.
“We can give you the file report, all that, no problem.”
Is he talking to himself or me? “Okay.”
“I went into the ER to do the exam…” He zoned out, staring into
the middle distance.
