0 DAYS TILL HALLOWEEN

WHAT A NIGHT!
The moon was full and fat as a procession of monsters returned from the
land of the living back to their home of Halloween Town. Dead leaves
skittered around their heels as they followed a sign held by a pumpkinheaded scarecrow that directed them to the town’s gate. The town itself rose

high on a hill, full of angular buildings with tangerine lights glowing in the
windows and creaky iron fences festooned with jack-o’-lanterns. Overhead,
a sinister shadow eclipsed the moon, only to burst into a cluster of bats. As
they neared the gate, every resident, from the hulking Behemoth to the
tiniest flea, agreed that it had been the most shriek-filled, terror-inducing
Halloween anyone could remember.
Their voices rang out as they celebrated their most beloved night: “This
is Halloween!”

Their haunting words painted a terrifying picture of a night filled with
mayhem and mischief. The Creature Under the Bed cackled as he recalled
lying in wait beneath a checkered bedspread, with his sharp teeth and
glowing red eyes. The Creature Under the Stairs wiggled his snakelike
fingers, which had hissed at boys and girls. The Harlequin Demon jumped
out of a trash can at the same time the Wolfman burst through a stone wall,
followed by the Melting Man popping up from the sewer. The Clown with
the Tear-Away Face tottered back and forth on his unicycle, ripping away
his face to reveal nothing but a hollow void. And soaring above them all, a
pair of witch sisters snickered as they raced on their brooms, recounting
tales of the night’s exploits to the jack-o’-lantern heads in the pumpkin
patch below.

The two-faced mayor of Halloween Town marshaled the procession
with an extra spring in his step. His top hat was narrow and so elongated
that it nearly doubled his height. He wore the favorite of his two faces, a
rosy-cheeked one with a maniacal grin. Like any good elected official, he
knew how to make a dramatic entrance.

On the other side of the gates, the Town Square was empty except for a
few spiders and rats and the handful of monstrous youngsters who weren’t
old enough for their first Halloween scares. The Winged Demon and the
Corpse Kid gasped when they heard the jubilant crowd returning. They
abandoned the torture game they’d been playing, letting the guillotine slam
down on a pumpkin and split it cleanly in two, and rushed toward the gates
just steps behind the Corpse Kid’s undead parents. Meanwhile, perched
high over town inside a nearby castle, a rag doll gripped the bars of her cell
window, listening to the procession as she combed her long red hair with a
broken jawbone.
