Cami
– One Year Later –
The magic of true love’s first kiss was a lie.
Not that they didn’t have power. Poets wrote entire sonnets,
ballads even, about kisses. And in Oz, there was more than a little
truth to the old sayings that such kisses could, and readily did, break
enchantments. Everyone knew of someone—or at least heard a story of a
friend of a friend—who had a spell undone by true love’s kiss. The trouble
was just as many other things were undone by kisses. Friendships.
Virginities. Marriages. Especially marriages, Queen Rayna would say,
usually with a knowing laugh.
It was this undoing that was in Camellia White’s mind at the end of her
first kiss. Every hope and fantasy she had built over the last six months
shattered when cold reality brushed her warm lips.
All because of Prince Marcus’s kiss. She had expected true love’s first
kiss to be warm and passionate. But the prince’s lips reminded her of when
she was ten winters old and practicing kisses against a cold mirror.
Cami pulled back from Marcus and sank into the only softness to be
found: the velvet divan they lounged upon near the back wall of the room.
The expectation of love’s soaring flight had become a chest-clenching free
fall. The floral confessions of his love for her, mere moments earlier, were
now nothing but weeds in a garden of his thorn-filled smirk.
His words, before their kiss, “Do you give me your heart, Cami?” and
her eager reply, “Yes. All of it. Forever,” had barely finished finding the
corners of the decadently gilded royal resting room when she realized
something was wrong. She should have never spoken that sentiment. All
Words had power in Oz, and she had brashly given them over to him with a
naivety that had been punctuated with a kiss as chilled as a snowfall in
spring.
The shell of innocence around her heart had shattered and fallen off
with the hammer of his sudden icy change.
Yes, Cami had yearned for the touch of his lips on her tender red ones in
what was supposed to be the most romantic moment of her sixteen winters.
Her heart had been running circles around her stomach, smacking
butterflies into the air with the anticipation of his perfect lips on her own.
The idea had been a physical thing settling into her body, turning her inside
out until she thought her skin would tear open from the want of it.
How could she not feel those things? All the wooing. All the secret
meetings to hide their burgeoning love for each other from his mother,
Queen Rayna. The flirtatious comments he had shared only with Cami,
unsaid in front of the other heartmaidens but always a moment away from
being hers with each sly glance he gave her. His gloved hands brushing
against her exposed skin, bringing forth shivers every time. All those signs
of love were instantly forgotten in his now cold, disinterested eyes.
