“When did you start saving yourself for Christ?”
millie
My vanilla Aviator Nation hoodie scrunches closed around my face as
I tug hard on the strings. I grumble, feeling the bounce of the plane’s
wheels on the runway.
“Remind me why I said yes to this?”
Eleanor, my best friend, shifts in her posh leather seat to stare at me
before she whooshes out a contemplative breath, pausing before saying,
“Your face looks like a butthole.” I narrow my eyes, making her lips press
together before she continues. “Okay, I have two possible answers, but
before I choose which, do you need big sister energy or best friend
energy?”
I’m considering my options while still holding the strings before my
answer’s gritted between my teeth.
“What’s the difference?”
She grins, shifting even more so her back is completely facing the aisle.
“Big sisters have zero tact and always tell the truth-truth; best friends
can exist in the gray.”
I purse my lips, wiggling them back and forth before I decide.
“I’m thinking bestie energy.” My bottom lip protrudes just a bit before I
add, “After all, there’s a considerable chance that I’m still a fragile little
baby dandelion.”
Elle taps my nose and winks, keeping her voice gentle.
“You’re here because it’s the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. And
being that you’re my soulmate and quite possibly my fiancé’s other best
friend, it’s a no-brainer that we would want you to celebrate the season of
love in paradise together with us and the Tweedles. And that’ll be a fun
reunion too. You haven’t really hung out since Vegas.”
My shoulders jostle slightly with a silent laugh over the nickname given
to her fiancé’s two best friends and teammates, Nate and TJ.
I think it’s the Tweedles because they’re practically inseparable.
Although, I secretly think of them as Tweedle big dick (gray sweats are my
scientific proof) and Tweedle thigh tats.
“Be-tee-dubs, it was hella cool of you to let them stay in your suite.
Maybe you guys can have late-night pillow fights or something?”
I want to laugh at the or something part. I do. Except the only reason TJ
and Nate have a fancy room is because my boyfriend cheated on me, in
front of me, leaving me a lonely, miserable Bridgerton spinster with no
prospects for our Valentine’s Day vacay. I don’t even have a gossip column
to roast them in.
“Sorrows. Sorrows. Prayers for my dignity,” I whisper to myself.
Eleanor rubs my arm as I drop my hands from the strings of my hoodie
before un-scrunching it off my head, and holding up a finger to shut her up
because I can already see a joke on the tip of her tongue.
“Elle, I can’t believe I’m here…not Hawaii, but back in the place where
no matter how much I want to be the girl in a rom-com who’s about to
accidentally bump into ‘the one,’ I’m actually the ‘tired of dating, always
chooses assholes, and wallows in self-pity’ main character in my real life.”
“Dating sucks,” she commiserates.
But I huff, “Guys suck.”
