Micaela Murphy was a busy girl. Always on a deadline could very well be
her middle name. Micaela Always on a Deadline Murphy.
She’d have it no other way either. Creating worlds and characters out of
nothing was the coolest job she could ever have.

She certainly didn’t have time for the holidays and everything that went with
it. She was in the middle of finishing her eighth book and she wanted nothing
more than to hibernate in her apartment and get it done.
That and she was well… on a deadline. Her editor was already breathing fire
down her neck, eager for what Micaela liked to think was her next
masterpiece.

She was just about getting to the climax of the story where the killer was
hiding in the heroine’s bedroom. Now she wanted to spit she was so mad she
had to stop to go home and spend the holidays with her crazy family.
If she didn’t go home, her family, all fifteen of them, including four kids
under the age of five—and that wasn’t including her aunts, and cousins—
would arrive at her perfectly disorderly two-bedroom New York apartment
with a cooked turkey, dressed ham and sticky prime ribs in tow.

Not to mention, Courtney, the youngest sister of five of them and everyone’s
firm favorite, was still in search of making a signature dish that would
become a Grant family tradition, Grant being the surname of her fiancé. She
had high hopes for him to take up politics like his father and she imagined
being the first lady and doing a Christmas layout in some popular boring
magazine with her perfect family in her perfect home where she would talk
about THE family tradition dish she had started.

Micaela wasn’t holding her breath. Courtney couldn’t cook. At all. Last year
it had been mac and cheese with chocolate sauce. Who knew what horror
she’d think up this year?
If her family arrived at her doorstep, she wouldn’t be able to get rid of them
until after New Year.
Nope.

She couldn’t have her loud, nosy relatives invading her space, so she’d
packed a bag, took a moment to hire a boyfriend, and hauled her ass off to
Missouri.
She didn’t bother with checking the details, the credentials, or the image of
the actor. She didn’t care. She had just asked for someone in their early
thirties to play the part of her boyfriend for a duration of three days
maximum.

She had just barely made her flight too. She’d been up all-night writing until
eight in the morning. She then told herself she would sleep for an hour so she
didn’t look like a squirrel on steroids, still giving her ample time to pack her
bag and wrestle her hair into submission before her afternoon flight. But she
had slept through her alarm.

It wasn’t any fun flying out of the shower and into her clothes, her hair
dripping wet. That had forced her to blow dry her tresses using her fingers,
which was a mistake because her hair had made her upgrade from a squirrel
on steroids to an electrocuted squirrel on steroids.
Not her problem, she decided, as she stuffed her hair under a thick knit
beanie, wrapped a scarf around her neck, and half-power walked, half-ran to
the cab she had already kept waiting.
