JULIA
For three long years, I’ve been waiting for this moment. Waiting for the
taste of freedom. Considering the years my dad was alive and forced
me to marry the monster I was arranged to marry, I’ve been waiting a
total of eight years. When I wake to the nightmare that’s been haunting me
for the last three nights, it feels surreal to hear the sounds of birds. People
don’t realize how hard it is to fake your own death. It takes years of
planning, a lot of money, and patience. And I’ve been so patient, I fear for
anyone who comes in contact with me because I’ve exhausted all my
resources for loving or being loved.
I pull out my bag that I use as a pillow. This bag is my lifeline, so I
sleep with it every night. It’s all I have to survive—three million in cash. I
wanted to take more, but there was only so much I could hide away each
month without my husband becoming suspicious over these last three years.
My stomach growls. I haven’t eaten in ten hours, and I’m starving, so I
gather my shoes off the floor, put them on, and leave the hotel room. I have
lived in hotels for three weeks, and I’m ready to meet this new real estate
agent. I’ve been looking online for houses, and I think I’m going to love this
one I found yesterday.
The only good thing about coming from a wealthy Lebanese family is I
don’t have to worry about money for a while. Only when I buy a house, get
a car, and purchase furniture will I need to have money coming in, and I
will eventually have to get a job. Something I haven’t had in my life before.
The thought should scare me, but it thrills me, igniting the fire burning
inside me. Just thinking of having my very own money makes freedom taste
even sweeter. Also, I’ll be around people and be able to make some friends
in this new town—in my new life.
Once in my car I check my surroundings, a natural reaction when I
drive anywhere nowadays. As I press my foot on the brake, I look to my left
and right. When I see nothing or anyone suspicious, I pull out of the hotel
parking lot and drive to the nearest gas station to grab something to eat
before meeting this real estate agent. Love’s Travel Stop is on the way to
the house, so I pull into the parking lot and decide to fill the car up while
I’m here.
“This is where a debit card would come in handy,” I murmur as I walk
up to the convenience store. Right when I walk in, eyes dart in my
direction, staring. I’m still not used to the attention I get from around here. I
spot the section where they keep hot sandwiches and head in that direction,
with an unwavering gaze.
