Mariana (Bellany)
I waited in front of the entrance to The Mirage Hotel, losing my patience
by the second. With the coming and going of each guest, the large glass doors
behind me opened and closed allowing a burst of chilled air to escape, but it
was no match for the oven-like heat outside. Ubers and taxis drifted in and
out with no sign of the black Mustang. I checked my phone again. It was a
quarter after four. If Ned was trying to pull some kind of scam on me I was
going to be livid. This was my thing! I was the one who was supposed to be
running the con on him, not the other way around.
My phone vibrated. It was a text message from Ned: Mariana, my
family’s excited to have you come work for us. Thanks again for
accepting the job. I’ll see you later tonight.
I started typing a response: Find yourself another nanny. I’m no
longer interested. My finger hovered over the screen. I was about to hit send
when the sound of squealing tires stopped me. A shiny black Mustang came
to a stop right in front of the hotel entrance, engine roaring, heavy bass
thumping. Okay, so maybe Ned wasn’t scamming me, but I was still mad that
I had to stand here and wait. I also didn’t like the fact that Ned was too busy
to pick me up himself.
The driver’s side door swung open. Rap music instantly overtook
every other sound. The driver leaned way over into the passenger seat and
stared out. It was Ned’s son, Oliver. I cringed at how ugly he was. It was
almost painful to look at him. He slid back to his side, turned down the
music, then got out and walked around the back of the Mustang.
Oliver was tall, at least six feet, and there wasn’t much fat or muscle
on his body. His facial features were asymmetrical, and he had no jawline. I
couldn’t tell where his chin ended and his neck began. He looked just as
repulsive as his father.
I knew from experience that jobs like this one progressed much
quicker and easier for me when there was a little bit of chemistry from the
start. Flirting doesn’t work out unless it is believable, and I had certain criteria
that a guy had to meet in order for me to even consider flirting with him.
Oliver fell short of almost every standard. The only chance he had at
redeeming himself was in the personality department, and he wasn’t off to a
very good start.
Oliver half-strutted and half-waddled over to a lady who looked to be
in her mid-forties. His shorts sagged like a wet beach towel. A Raiders ball
cap perched sideways on his head seemed to be waiting for just the right
moment to leap to the ground and attempt an escape. “Excuse me,” he said to
the woman. “Are you Mariana?”
“No,” she replied.
