Winter
Through the bug splattered windshield, I stared in stunned silence,
drinking in the view of the enormous beachfront house looming in front of
me. Everything went eerily silent like the calm before the storm, only there
wasn’t a cloud in the sky. A cold shiver snaked down my spine, despite the
fact that it was a hundred degrees outside today and probably a hundred and
twenty inside the SUV where I was sitting. Mom did her happy dance,
bouncing around in her seat like she was a teenager, a forty-year-old
teenager. But I couldn’t share her enthusiasm. I couldn’t even crack a smile.
flected off of her silver hoop earring. “Winter, I can’t believe it! Just
look at how beautiful this house is!” She squealed like a game show
contestant who had just won a big prize. Mom and I had inherited this house,
and that was a huge game changer for us. The nicest place we had ever lived
before was a single wide trailer with a hole in the living room floor that we
covered up with a piece of plywood and a rug. (Yes, people tripped over it all
the time.)
But Mom shouldn’t have been so happy. We had just picked up Aunt
Emma’s ashes from the funeral home. That was our first stop when we
arrived in Kure Beach, North Carolina.
What bothered me the most about Mom’s behavior was that I felt like
she was genuinely glad her sister had died. To say that Mom hated Aunt
Emma wasn’t a strong enough statement to describe how she felt about her.
The last time they spoke to each other was eight years ago, when I was ten.
The SUV’s door squealed as I pushed it open and climbed out.
The
scent of fast food wrappers and greasy french fries quickly dissipated, being
replaced by the smell of the salty sea air. Mom started taking pictures of the
house with her phone. I turned and looked at the cardboard box sitting in the
back seat that held Aunt Emma’s ashes. I’m sorry, I thought to myself,
wishing that she was still alive so she could hear me.
