The Warning
The dark fog spreadthrough the realm of Thorstorm. It blinded the
citizens of Southern Cities, crept north upon the town of
Blizzardshore, and slithered farther along the coast toward the northernmost
part of the island. The fog swallowed the first trees of Deerhide Forest,
deepened the shadows of the approaching night, and rolled toward the
village of Icecreek.

The sun shone on the village with all its might the following morning,
though, as if determined to burn through the fog before it could reach the
village and swallow the unsuspecting denizens. Baard Thon squinted in the
sunlight as he said goodbye to his parents and went from their hut to the
stable. A warm breeze ruffled his fair hair, which he tucked behind his ears
to keep out of his face. The scent of wildflowers wafted from a nearby
meadow.

the haft slide through a loop on his belt. As he led the mare outside, his twin
sister, Elya, waited for him in front of their hut, the breeze swaying the skirt
of her gray, roughspun dress. Elya’s hand rested on the large head of her
guide wolf, Fierran, which shifted back and forth and glanced around for
any signs of danger. Baard remembered waking a few times to Fierran’s
howling. What had gotten into the animals?

Elya lifted her head at the sound of Whitecap’s hooves and smiled. She
never opened her eyes because, as she said, it was too much useless work.
Even so, people found her gentle face adorned with smooth skin, an
aquiline nose, and rosy lips beautiful. Her wavy hair, a bit darker than
Baard’s, was a chestnut brown with golden hues that shone in the sun and
fell over her shoulders and down the back just like his
