The Boogey Man’s Coming
A wave of nausea hit me hard and fast. My eyes popped open as I turned
my head, biting back bile, my throat burning. An endless view of flat, snowcovered land surrounded by a smattering of thick trees coated in snow and
ice greeted me. Watchers I’d never seen before intercepted my view, and my
gaze followed them as they ran between fur-lined sacks on their sleds to a
small group crouched over a still body.
Shai!
Nick, Lana, and Brantley remained at his side. A blue and monstrous
mountain in the distance with a few ice castles scattered at its base provided
a stark contrast to the gruesome wreckage of Shai’s body.
Panic flooded me as I searched for Will, relaxing slightly as I found
him only about a foot away from me. Though he still lay unconscious, he
now rested on a golden sled. I traced the handsome features of his face,
soaking him in. But then a small shadow clouded over me. My heart pumped
harder, prepared to crack out of my chest as fear threatened to take hold of
me. My connection to Will was barely tangible.
“Will,” I croaked, my throat burning, as I reached for him. The ruddy
beat of our bond was slow and faint. Will needed help. If I could just grasp
his hand, I could…
In a flash, Nick was at my side, catching me before I fell from my own
sled.
“What is it?” he asked, his eyes wild with concern.
“Will, he’s… I can’t feel…”
“Speak, girl!” Nick hollered and I flinched.
“He needs help!” I cried.
Nick whipped around on the balls of his feet. He took one step from his
crouched position and laid his hand over Will’s breastbone. A quick blue
light lit up Nick’s hand and Will’s chest. Without a word, Nick stood. He
flung his jacket tail and scooped me up, quickly situating me so that I lay on
top of Will, my head on his chest, arms tucked into his side, and legs
entwined with his. Nick turned, grabbed the fur blanket I’d been lying on in
the sled, and draped it over us.
“He was beginning to freeze. Your body heat should help keep him
warm enough until we reach the castle. In addition, your bond should help
him greatly.”
I wanted to ask more questions, but Nick turned his head and shouted,
“Mother, we need to be leaving.”
Immediately, a woman donning a silver laurel crown was at his side. I
stared at her familiar gray eyes as they found mine, and words echoed in my
mind, tugging at my recent memories.
“Welcome to Cristes, Lydia. We have been waiting a very long time for
you.”
