TUESDAY
My old Camry is held together with prayers and duct tape, but it
somehow rumbles down the road to my house, spitting up gravel
behind me as I carefully navigate around the potholes that are
forming in the road. Even with only a handful of neighbors on the street, the
road continues to deteriorate, but it’s not a state road, so guess who doesn’t
care?
The state.
My chest feels tight as I nose onto my driveway. Parking the car by the
sagging outbuilding, I step out onto brushy patches of grass and hurry to the
house. Dave should have been on the bus home today. He should already be
here. But the fact he didn’t text me to let me know he got home, that
nothing was wrong…
Well, it concerns me.
The front porch is a little saggy, but I ignore how the boards need to be
ripped up and replaced as I shove my key in the front lock. Being a single
mom is hard no matter where you live and what job you have. But being a
single mom when the best you can do is working at the diner in town?
It’s tricky to make ends meet. I’m much more worried about getting
food on the table and not nearly as concerned about whether or not the
boards on the porch need to be replaced.
“Dave, I’m home.” When I call out for my son, I slap a smile on my
face. That’s the only way to mask the frustration running through me right
now.
“In the kitchen,” he calls back, his voice low—lower than it was
yesterday, I swear, he just keeps growing—and I drop my purse, hurrying to
him.
“How was your day?” I’m nervous, standing in the doorway. It’s silly,
isn’t it? To be so nervous when faced with your own child? I carried him,
grew him, kissed his little head, and fed him. It’s always been the two of us
against the world, and I love Dave more than I love anything or anyone
else.
But I’m still nervous.
He stands, unfolding himself from the chair at the table, then crosses his
arms as he looks at me. “The school wants to talk to you.”
My heart sinks. Of course they do. One look at the expression on Dave’s
face and I already know things must be bad.
“Dave,” I begin, but he waves his hand at me. It’s now that I realize,
with a start, I have to look up at my son. He towers over me, a smirk on his
face, and until this moment he’s never looked more like his father.
“Mom, chill. It’s just school. Just stuff like math, even. When am I ever
going to use math?” He shrugs. “I thought you’d want to know. I stayed
here until you got off work just so I could tell you to your face.”
“I can’t keep taking time off work to handle whatever you have going
on at school. I’ve told you that, Dave. Do you want me to lose my job,
