Daemon lifted Julian into his arms as they walked down the hallway
towards the back door and the coach house. His fledgling let out a
surprised laugh, but wound his long legs around Daemon’s waist easily.
Julian’s cheeks flushed red and he did glance around to see who noticed
this. It was adorable that Julian cared what others would think. Though
these Vampires seemed more conservative than he was used to as their
reactions to his nudity had told him.
“What’s up?” Julian asked as he slung his arms around Daemon’s neck.
One of his eyebrows rose. “Is something wrong?”
“No,” Daemon answered and said nothing else, because he sensed if he
did that he would reveal to both of them what was on his mind and in his
heart. He wanted to lose himself in Julian’s body, but his fledgling was
having none of it.
“Huh, so you’re all good?” Another raised eyebrow.
“I am with you,” Daemon stated as if that was all there was to say.
Julian blinked a moment, his eyes going soft with tenderness. The
words had the intended effect of moving him as well as distracting him. But
his fledgling was determined to find out what was really going on with him
and wouldn’t be distracted even by the revelation of great truths between
them.
“You’re upset about Kaly, maybe? Upset they took Heath? Upset…
upset they betrayed you?” Julian prodded.
“Loyalty,” Daemon said, the word feeling torn out of him. The others
were just as difficult to say but they came out too, “Respect. Friendship.
Love.”
“Love?” Julian’s head lowered.
“Not that kind of love, my fledgling.” He kissed Julian’s cheek.
“No, I mean. Actually, I did think that,” Julian admitted. “You eleven
Immortals have been together for ages. You could have had love affairs.”
“We did. Some of us, but it is not like what I feel for you,” Daemon
answered.
He felt Julian still in his arms and his fledgling studied his face. “I
thought you said you weren’t sure what was between us. All those
complications with you being king.”
“I stand by what I said. But I cannot deny that you are integral to me in
a way I did not understand then. I believe my understanding will only
grow. Do you not feel the same?” Daemon asked.
It was only after he asked it that he realized he could be setting himself
up for a blow. Julian was determined to be independent.
“You’re …” Julian swallowed deeply. “I don’t think there is any me
without you. And that scares the living crap out of me. Will this change?
Will it get easier? I mean when you left me here to go after Kaly, I was
going crazy! I don’t want to feel…”
“Feel what?”
“I lost my parents, Daemon. Because I was a kid when it happened, I
couldn’t believe they were gone.” Julian’s gaze was suddenly distant.
