It was hard to feel sexy when the world always told me that my body
was wrong. That it was too big, or too tall, or that my thighs were too large,
or any other criticism they could come up with. Unfortunately, after a while
I started to believe it.

I cringed as my eyes traveled over all the parts that I have been taught to
hate. Picking a Halloween costume every year tended to reopen those past
wounds. It was much easier to hide your insecurities when there wasn’t a
whole day that focused solely on your outfit, especially when your costume
had to be perfect. It had to call back to the most outrageous pop culture
moment, or be revealing enough to be tempting, but not too much so. As a
result, the outfits usually fell into two opposing categories (and I guess the
same argument could be made for people as well): the funny one or the sexy
one. As I stood there, looking at myself in the floor-length mirror in my
Irish flat, I found myself wishing that I picked the former.

Halloween night is the one night when every woman is supposed to feel
confident, desirable. At least, that was what the movies told us. But there I
was, standing in front of my reflection in a costume that felt not only
ridiculous but way too short, scrutinizing my appearance. It felt like I was
wearing a skin that wasn’t my own. I sighed angrily as I ran my fingers
through my tangled curls. An hour passed, completely wasted, as I tried to
tame my long, wavy reddish-brown hair. In the end, it looked more like a
tumbleweed than those coveted mermaid-style waves that effortlessly
bounced with each step. I was going for this whimsical, bohemian vibe. A
couple weeks ago, Reagan had me convinced that dressing up as a fairy for
Halloween was a must. It was my first holiday in Ireland, after all, and she
thought it was fitting that I just embraced their old folklore legends head on.
Easy for her to say, with her perfect athletic body and absolutely gorgeous
coffee-colored skin. She looked like a goddess every day of the week, and
I…well, I looked like a garden gnome.

“Reagan!” I called from the doorway to my room. “I can’t wear this out!
This is much shorter than I remember it being in the store.” I tugged at the
hemline of my dress, hoping it would grow a couple inches. There was too
much of my thigh exposed. Actually, I felt like too much of all my skin was
exposed. Not to mention that I felt like the dress hugged me in all the wrong
places. Reagan poked her head out of her room from across the hall.
