War?” I stared at Arianne stunned. I suddenly felt faint. Her
showing up at our doorstep could only mean one thing, Adrian
was on the throne. This was a disaster.
I had loved Adrian once before I found out that he, his father, and my
mother were behind my father’s death, Sebastian’s brother’s death, and
admittedly less regrettably, Alwyn’s death. My mother had committed
suicide after confessing her culpability in killing the dead royals. They had
all been poisoned with belladonna, a plant native to Atlantia, and my
mother ended her life the same way.
“I tried… I tried to stop them, but my mother, she went back on her
word and crowned my brother. I sailed here as quickly as I could on a
dingy. It was just me.” Well, that explained the tears in her dress. Between
being backstabbed, literally, by her brother and mother, and having to row
herself across an ocean filled with dangerous creatures there was no telling
what had happened to her dress.
“I don’t blame you, Arianne, this just puts Valencia in a difficult
position. The good news is we’re allied with Marchiabello, the bad news is
that we can’t count on Cortenzia to aid us in our cause. They’re notorious
for staying neutral during times of war unless they absolutely have to get
involved.” I sighed, crossed the room to my bed, and sat at the edge.
“I need to inform my parents of what’s happening,” Sebastian said, and
I nodded. “I’ll be back once I’m off the phone with them.” He tenderly
kissed the top of my forehead and then left the room, leaving Arianne and
me alone.
“Does anyone know you’re here?” I asked her. The fewer people who
knew the better for all of us. As far as Adrian knew this would be a surprise
attack once he came to our shores. Luckily for us, we would be ready for
him. Hopefully with the aid of Marchiabellian troops. I prayed that
Sebastian would be able to sway his parents to our side.
“Brianna, Camilla, and Caspian,” she confessed, blanching.
“I’m sorry, who?” I had clearly missed something. Brianna and Camilla
knowing was fine, they knew better than to say anything to anyone before
talking to me. But I didn’t know who Caspian was, and that made him a
liability.
“Caspian, the Prince of the sirens,” she said, voice barely above a
whisper.
“I’m sorry, why did you tell someone who’s attacking my shores?”
“Prince Caspian has been actively trying to prevent his father from
attacking your shores. He’s the siren that I proved my experiment on. No
one else was brave enough to trust that I knew what I was doing. He’s here
with Brianna and Camilla.”
“He’s where?” I practically shouted. I walked out of my room, the fact
that Arianne was trailing behind me barely registering. Brianna and Camilla
were in imminent danger and Arianne hadn’t led with that. I swore if he
touched one hair on their heads…
Luckily Brianna’s rooms were right next to mine, so it was easy to find
them.
