SO FAR FROM PERFECT
I didn’t put stock in the stars anymore. To lazily look up at the sky and seek
some sort of epiphany . . . who had time for such frivolity? If anything, the
stars had crashed down around me, and the only way I’d get my life back
together was if I picked them up, one by one, and placed them exactly where
I needed them to be.

The secret to life was simple: you put your nose to the grindstone and
got things done with an impenetrable resilience. That was how I’d made
something of myself. My father said my drive comes from a need to fill a
void in my life. Since when did the reasons we worked hard matter? They
didn’t put your motivations in your obituary, only your accomplishments.
Three years ago, I’d borrowed every penny I could to open a veterinary
practice in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.

Though I
still remembered the pride of opening our clinic’s doors for the first time—
realizing a nearly impossible-to-achieve dream I’d had since I was eighteen—
I couldn’t wait to take the next step in growing what I somewhat jokingly
called “my empire.” I’d come into a good deal of money in December
because of a surgical patent I’d sold, and a portion of the proceeds was going
into the construction of a state-of-the-art practice a few miles away.

We shared our current space with a group of attorneys, who had been
happy to hear we would be moving out soon. Not only were they trying to
expand, but I’m sure the animal noises were getting to them. They weren’t as
happy as I, though, because the building that had once housed the pinnacle of
a dream now felt outdated and cramped—especially where I was now, in the
rather drab lobby, with its cracked linoleum floors and drop ceiling.

The cramped feeling was exaggerated by the fact that all eight of my
staff had ambushed me with a cake and were currently singing a “Happy
Birthday” that was surprisingly jolly for so early in the morning. Even the
dogs in their kennels had joined in and barked at the commotion.

My office manager, Mary Beth, held a cake decorated with plastic
animals. “Happy Birthday, Dr. Livingston” was scrawled across the top in
red lettering. Having recently recovered from breast cancer, Mary Beth
always wore a hat or scarf on her head. Today she wore a lime-green baseball
cap. Considering what she’d been through, her smile was all the more
infectious.

I stood with my hands clasped at my waist, waiting eagerly for the end
of the song so I could blow out the candles and escape. I was so much better
suited for the company of animals. But the other side of me, the veterinary
surgeon who’d led this group standing before him, wore a big fat forced
smile. I showed so many teeth I probably looked like I was auditioning for a
toothpaste commercial. Not that I wasn’t appreciative of their gesture, as that
kind of camaraderie among colleagues was special.
