Nothing is more satisfying than putting on a finished costume for the first
time. The feeling of accomplishment at being able to don an elaborate gown
I’ve spent weeks or months on makes all the hard work worth it. The only
possible comparison would be the thrill of creating my first design for a
piece, flushed with eagerness to work on a new project.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t anywhere near either of those stages. I was in
the tortuous construction phase. I stared at my dress form, garbed in a halffinished midnight blue gown. I gathered my hair up, twisting it before
sticking it with a hair stick to keep the locks out of my face as I worked. By
the strictest sense of the word, the dress was wearable, but a dollar-store
Halloween costume would be less embarrassing. I put the silver thread
through my needle before taking the skirt in my hand. In light chalk over
the dress were the sea serpent and waves that needed to be embroidered into
the fabric.

From my bed, I heard Dakota give a deep sigh. They were lying on their
stomach, watching my television, flipping through thumbnails on my
YouTube recommendations page. I didn’t generally like people in my
bedroom, especially while I was in the middle of a costume, but Dakota was
one of the rare exceptions. Being my best friend since I was five and having
been raised as practically a sibling during our teen years gave them a
singular position in my life. Besides, with their busy job, I didn’t get to
spend as much time with them as I would have liked. Dakota let out another
sigh.

“You seem bored,” I said. “You were all excited to come over, but I said
I would be working on my costume.”
Dakota rested their head against the belly of Stryker, my Irish Settler.
Their electric blue hair clashed with the dog’s red fur. “You’re not the
problem, Trix. Your algorithm is. I’ve seen half the videos you are getting
recommended.”

“Then watch the other half,” I suggested.
Dakota rolled their eyes. “Well, if you’re going to get logical about it.”
They stopped on a thumbnail that read Will Dawn of the Sword Succeed
This Time?

“A speculation video? Really?” I turned my focus back onto my
embroidery. “I would’ve thought you knew all the information about the
show already.”
“It’s not about the information,” Dakota pointed out. “Everyone in the
fandom has their own opinion. I like to get an idea of what people are
thinking.”

They pressed the play button. I glanced at the screen with a bearded
man sitting in front of shelves filled with action figures and statues. The
preamble introduced him and begged for subscriptions like every other nerd
with a webcam. However, I couldn’t help but become intrigued when he got
into the meat of his video. Dakota was right: It was interesting to get other
people’s opinions on what was going on in fandom.
